Laid Up: Another Season 3–Chapter 25A

“Ummm. . .”  Tina began.  “Nu-Nu, where is Helena?”

Nu-Nu stared at what she was doing and said, “Miss Peabody in her room resting.”  She poured iced tea from the pitcher over the ice in the ribbed beverage glass.

Tina nodded.  “Is Dylan with her?”

“No, Miss Moreland not here today.”

    “Last night?”

“No, Miss.”  Nu-Nu cleared her throat trying to signal to Tina that this course of conversation was on a need to know basis and she didn’t need to know anything about her boss’ personal life.

    “Did they have a fight?”

Nu-Nu smiled at Tina.  “Here we are, then.  Your lunch.”  She moved around Tina.  “On the deck, yes?”

“Yeah,” Tina said catching on.  “Thanks.”

As they crossed into the living room from the kitchen, Tina glanced down the hall.  It was strange that Helena had remained incommunicado for the past hour.  The heiress usually liked being a part of everything.

    * * * * *

Shane sat at the kitchen table with her laptop in front of her and her cell next to it.   She had talked to Shay half an hour ago and expected the next call in another half hour.  While she waited, she was going to try to solve this problem.

“Carm,” she called out.  “Do you remember the name of that diner on the street where you picked me up?”

“I think it was called Biscuit or Biscuits or something like that,” she answered from the living room.  Carmen was on her laptop, too, but she wasn’t trying to track down anyone in Oregon City.  There was no need to tell Shane, but she doubted that Shay’s parents would be eager to have him back there.  Carmen had a strong feeling that Shay was about to become his older half sister’s responsibility and she felt strongly that Shane wasn’t in the least bit capable of it.  When she could, Carmen intended to call St. Linus.  She hadn’t been in her childhood church in years, but her mother was friendly with Father and he was often at the house.  She’d talk to him; ask him what they should do about Shay.  St. Linus was affiliated with a good school, had various programs for kids, and although it sounded strange, her mom would probably want to keep Shay if his father and Carla opted out of continuing their parental duty.  Her mom had unofficially taken in so many kids over the years.  When Carmen was eleven she discovered that three of the kids who lived with the family were of no relation.  Carmen’s mom opened her home to everyone and everything and thought nothing of it.  Dogs, cats, children, on holidays, homeless women and men.  There was always someone new.  Her mom and St. Linus were options she’d mention to Shane at the appropriate time.

    1. I don’t think I can wait til Monday…….pls pls tell me tina will be ok…What is it w/you writers and your cliff hangers….omg, there goes my weekend…..

    2. Oh, the wait for each chapter is torture, but such bliss when a new chapter arrives. Love this so much that I am very impatient for the next installment. Thanks so much.

    3. Yes, you posted! Love you so much. Shane and Carmen are so caliente together, love their energy as a couple. I hope that Shay will not put a damper on their sex life because the way you write it is mindblowing. HOT, HOT. HOT.Looking forward to Moday!

    4. First-rate prose, rich characters, compelling storylines, and awesome cliffhangers. What more could a reader want? Thanks for posting! Counting the hours till Monday . . .

    5. Fabulous as ever, Portia. Marcus needs to back off. Bette is so not going to like this when she comes back home. And she needs to pick up her voicemail, soon. Carmen… I dunno. A little support for Shane would be good, but she has a point. She’s laid it all out there, at least, so Shane can’t say she din’t see it coming if Carmen is less than enthusiastic when Shay gets to LA. I’m so stoked you posted, can’t wait for Monday. Thanks!

    6. “”Mister Allenwood’s termination of parental rights is in order” …I don’t believe I’ve read sweeter words today! You capture the original voices of all the characters so faithfully and expand upon them, making them so much more lush and full-bodied. I would imagine that it would please the actresses greatly to read what you have done with the paltry characterizations that they have labored so mightily to give life to. You are their ally, you give the characters soul. I hope they can know that somewhere, justice is being done to the original concept. Really, I can’t thank you enough for this fully-realized work. It’s a shame you aren’t the one doing the scripts for the series. But, it would be so out of the spirit of what you do to be negative, I rejoice in your wonderful work!

    7. This is such a great story. I go through long periods where I keep a book mark on the current page. I’ve been running through them lately and Iam psyched I have another chapter to go, and from your author notes, a long one…my favorite! Anyway, thank you so much for your time and devotion to the story. I, by the way, love the t/b storyline and as far as I am concerned, you can’t have too much of them.

    8. Hey Portia, Am grinning from ear to ear at your mention. Sweet! Now I really need go read your wonderful words. I adore the fact that this is only 1/4 of what you have written and is still 23 pages long. Heaven on earth as i sit down to read your magnificent melodrama. Be back later with my thoughts. Many thanks from Your Loyal Fan.

    9. Thanks so much for this story. I found it late and kept reading and reading to catch up. I’ll be sorry to see it end but can see how much work has gone into it. So many story lines and characters to follow. Thanks again! Lin
