    LABRADORITE Part 2 3/4

    INTERIOR-JENNY’S HOUSE

    CARMEN

    (at the door)

    Hi, Jenny.

    JENNY

Carmen. It’s so good to see you. Come in.

CARMEN steps just inside of the door. JENNY walks over to CARMEN and hugs her, ushers her in, and shuts the door behind her. SHANE hasn’t said anything, is leaning against the counter, avoiding eye contact with CARMEN.

    JENNY

Have a seat, you want something to drink?

    CARMEN

    No, thanks.

    JENNY

    How’ve you been?

    CARMEN

Good. I’ve been good. Working a lot. I heard about Lez Girls.

    JENNY

    Oh yeah. Bad stuff?

    CARMEN

Well…yeah. But that’s good for you.

    JENNY

    It’s exciting.

JENNY looks over at SHANE who hasn’t moved since CARMEN walked in. Awkwardness fills the kitchen.

    JENNY

I’m actually working on some rewrites right now, so I’m gonna go. But we have to catch up. Do you want to get lunch sometime this week.

    CARMEN

    Yeah, that would be good.

    JENNY

    I’ll call you.

JENNY touches SHANE on the arm, makes gentle eye contact, and silently mouths the words: “YOU’RE OKAY.” to SHANE before exiting to her room.

    JENNY

    Good night.

    CARMEN

    Goodnight.

    SHANE

    Night.

    (tension filled silence)

    CARMEN

Aren’t you going to say anything?

    SHANE

    How’ve you been?

    CARMEN

    Fuck you!

SHANE looks down at the floor.

    CARMEN

I’m sorry. This was a bad idea, it’s late.

(gathers her bags and gets up to leave)

    SHANE

No, no Carmen. I’m sorry. Don’t leave. We should talk.

CARMEN thinks about it for a second and sits back down. SHANE sits down across from CARMEN.

    SHANE

    Really, how’ve you been?

    CARMEN

    Honestly, fucked up.

    SHANE

    (raises her beer) Well, cheers.

    CARMEN

I heard about your Dad, I’m sorry.

    SHANE

    It’s okay.

    (looks down at the table.)

Silence. Both CARMEN and SHANE are struggling to make eye contact.

    CARMEN

Did you go to the funeral?

    SHANE

    It’s on Thursday.

    CARMEN

    You should go.

    SHANE

    Yeah.

    (Tense beat)

    CARMEN

Why…why did you leave, why did you leave me standing there like that?

    SHANE

    I got scared.

    CARMEN

    Scared of what?

SHANE looks directly at CARMEN. Sad, but profound sincerity emanates from SHANE’S eyes.

    SHANE

    Disappointing you.

CARMEN begins to laugh. SHANE just stares at her. Through her laughter, CARMEN begins crying with her hand over her mouth.

    1. So…how long before Carmen finds out? And what will be the final outcome here? Lotsa irons in the fire now–what’s gonna happen with Max & Dax? So intriguing, this little story of yours!

    2. *standing in front of Cme* You are opening up a can of worms there, mam with that question….hehehe. Indeed, you do have quite a few irons in the fire…lot’s of stuff simmering. I suspect something is going to boil over soon!! Great inner dialog for Al about connecting Bette and Shane on the chart…lol!!
