Kiss Me at Midnight–A New Year’s Story
Bette sighed heavily. That wasn’t exactly the response she’d hoped for.
When the hours passed and they made their way to the hotel, the girls began figuring out who would be staying with whom.
“I wanna stay with ‘Lena! Mama, can we stay with ‘Lena?” Angelica said from Bette’s arms.
“I don’t know sweetie. If it’s okay with Helena…”
“Yeah, sure, I’d love it if you guys stayed with me and the kids.”
“Wow, this is getting weird…” Alice said, before Shane nudged her. She hadn’t asked Bette about it, but she knew that Bette hadn’t been running errands that night. She didn’t know what girl she had been seeing at the time, but now it was evident that the woman she was courting was the woman that she had been her rival and enemy for a full year.
“Okay, so Bette, Angelica, Helena and Wilson and Jun Ying once they get here will be in one room. Kit, Alice, and myself will be in one room and Max and Jenny will be in the other. Everybody okay with that?” Shane said.
“That’s fine.”
The women filed into the hotel rooms quickly with the ghosts of jet lag hanging on their backs. Angelica was the first to fall asleep in the room that Helena, Bette, and she occupied.
“I’m going to get some rest.” Bette whispered. She was keeping her distance it seemed as she kicked off her shoes and laid beside her daughter.
“Okay. My mother should be here in a couple hours. I’m sure she’d love to see you.”
“I’ll be up by then.” Helena sighed as Bette rolled over, her back towards her. She kicked off her own shoes and relaxed, cracking open her journal. A suggestion by Alice, her journal had become a log of all the things she wanted to say but couldn’t.
After a while of writing, she closed the book and watched as Bette woke up from her nap. Angelica slowly woke up too.
“Bette, can we talk?” Helena asked. Tentatively, she moved closer.
“What’s wrong?” She began lifting Angelica from the bed and making sure she looked presentable.
“I just…” There was a knock on the door, “Shit…I’ll get it.”

Happy New Years Ash and this was a perfect ending to this great short story!!
yea…i’m doing a happy dance!!! i hope this isn’t the end, but just a little break, right..awesome…LOVED IT!! THANKS!
Wonderful story :) and of course a wonderful way to start a new year!Happy New Year..
That is just such a sweet story
Hello Ash, that was so beautiful, I so loved the emotional Cat and Mouse game that they play with one another, they just don’t know what lines to cross. Having Bette find a letter seemed just so very natural, sometimes she needs an incentive to follow her emotions and desires, she has become quite guarded when it comes her how assertive she should be. I loved the children’s reactions that was so sweet. I don’t know why but I feel this one might just need a sequel, hmmmm… or maybe I just love your stories so much I want more :P, You are brilliant, Sincerely, JC
Great I loved it, this is just the way it should be. Thanks for writing this joyful story.
I wish you a happy New Year, Ash! Loved this beautiful story- calls for a sequel ;b
The perfect end to a perfect story. Naturally, Alice is chomping at the bit to broadcast the good news on her radio show.
