Kiss Me at Midnight–A New Year’s Story
“Two years ago, I would’ve never ever imagined that I’d be standing in your home, let alone giving you compliments. I’m glad we’ve both grown up enough to figure ourselves out and get over ourselves.” Bette said as she approached the door.
“Me too.”
Reluctantly, Helena opened the door and escorted Bette out to her car. Bette opened up her car door, but turned to face Helena before finally stepping inside.
“I had a good time. I always seem to have a good time when you’re around.” Suddenly, Helena couldn’t hear herself think over the beating of her own heart. Bette moved closer and placed a quick, pleasant, peck against Helena’s lips, “Goodnight. See you in the morning.”
Helena watched Bette drive away. She could taste Bette’s lips on her own and wondered what had just transpired.
~
After relieving Shane of her babysitting duties, Bette settled in for the night. She asked herself why she had just kissed Helena. The answer was simple: it just felt right. She allowed for her body and heart to take over and, when she did, she kissed her. Isn’t this where they were headed all along? She liked her. She really liked her.
She yawned. It was getting late and she and Angelica needed to be up early in the morning.
“Helena, Helena, Helena….” She softly whispered as she finally drifted into sleep.
Across town, Helena laid on her back against the crisp sheets on her bed. Her eyes were wide open. She looked for anything to think about.
“My children…New York…watch the ball drop….with Bette….who kissed me…fuck!”
Helena didn’t sleep at all.
~
At the airport, Helena and Bette avoided each other’s eyes for as long as possible, before it became literally impossible. As they sat side by side on the plane, with Angelica in the seat facing them, Bette leaned over and whispered.
“I’m sorry about last night.” She said.
“There’s nothing to be sorry for Bette. I…”
“Helena, say whatever’s on your mind.”
“It just kind of happened and I understand. I mean, we’ve been spending a lot of time together lately.”
“Yeah, exactly…”

Happy New Years Ash and this was a perfect ending to this great short story!!
yea…i’m doing a happy dance!!! i hope this isn’t the end, but just a little break, right..awesome…LOVED IT!! THANKS!
Wonderful story :) and of course a wonderful way to start a new year!Happy New Year..
That is just such a sweet story
Hello Ash, that was so beautiful, I so loved the emotional Cat and Mouse game that they play with one another, they just don’t know what lines to cross. Having Bette find a letter seemed just so very natural, sometimes she needs an incentive to follow her emotions and desires, she has become quite guarded when it comes her how assertive she should be. I loved the children’s reactions that was so sweet. I don’t know why but I feel this one might just need a sequel, hmmmm… or maybe I just love your stories so much I want more :P, You are brilliant, Sincerely, JC
Great I loved it, this is just the way it should be. Thanks for writing this joyful story.
I wish you a happy New Year, Ash! Loved this beautiful story- calls for a sequel ;b
The perfect end to a perfect story. Naturally, Alice is chomping at the bit to broadcast the good news on her radio show.
