I’d love you but I just don’t think I’m good enough for that…. Ch. 1

“Dana, press interview in ten minutes.”

I nodded, not looking up, not taking my eyes off the magazine in front of me. A press junction was nothing new; I’d be in there for an hour, having a pleasant (if not a little stifled) conversation with the interviewer before leaving without a second thought. Two weeks later, if I could be bothered, I’d quickly read through the article, no doubt one which quickly labels me as ‘The next big thing.’

I’ve been ‘the next big thing’ for three years. I know press interviews like I know how to breathe.

“The first room to your right Dane,” Monica, my manager said to me as I walked into the hallway. I could barely make out her head from behind a giant stack of paperwork she held in her hands. “Their person’s already in there. It’s the L.A. Times, nothing big. Be polite but make it short.”

I smiled, nodded and walked towards the room. My head was high as I reached for the doorknob, my mind clear and my muscles relaxed; this was my territory, it was what I lived for, it didn’t phase me in the slightest. I love what I do, I thought as I pushed open the door, a genuine-looking smile plastered across my face.

She had her back turned which was I guess the saving grace in the whole matter. If she had been looking at me, well god knows what would have happened. I was lucky enough as it was; I had caught her reflection in the room’s window and (even through my shock) had quickly (and quietly) exited the room. I was pretty sure she hadn’t noticed me.

I really hoped she hadn’t noticed me.

“Dana what are you still doing out here? Get in th-” was all Monica managed to get out of her mouth before I made my numb limbs move enough to grasp a hand over her mouth. “Mmmph hmmp phmph..!”

“Quiet!” I whispered loudly, looking to both sides, suddenly paranoid. “Into your office… now!”

I pushed her quickly down the hall and into her small, dinky office, locking the door behind me. I didn’t speak until I had collapsed on the lounge that took up one of her walls.
