    Hello sex. I am loneliness.

She nodded in approval, “I didn’t smoke for a long time but with everything that has happened”she just let her sentence trail off. “I didn’t want to smell of smoke near the baby but I don’t have to worry about that anymore.”

“The baby?” I asked softly. I wanted to give her the opportunity to pretend she didn’t hear me.

“Yes, she stopped the adoption. She doesn’t want me to see our baby anymore.” She took a long drag, trying to get control of her face. It was too late by then I had already studied her face enough to know what was going on. “She had promised that I would always be apart of the baby’s life.” Another long drag as she pushes her fingers through her curls. “I guess everyone lies.” Every time she said baby I could feel her pause fighting the urge to say the baby’s name.

“I am sorry,” I moved to her. I caught her in my arms in time to avoid seeing the tears that cascaded down her smooth cheeks. I don’t think I could stand to see her cry. She buried her head in my neck. “I have you,” I mumbled into her hair.

She raised her head. She kissed me for real for the first time. She held my face in her hands as she took possession of my lips. When she pulled back, she took a deep breath before she launched into her story. I sat there with my arms around her as she told me about the last three years of her life. She told me about trying to have a baby, the miscarriage, the show, the affair, the heartbreak, the pregnancy, the reconciliation, the lost job, her father, and the men. She told me about her friends and family. She stopped to cry again when she told me about Dana. She cried for herself, she cried for her friends, and she cried for the wonderful life she had lost.

“I am here in New York for a position at the Whitney,” she had smoked the whole pack by this time. Her hands moved nervously in her lap.

I moved my hands on top of hers to still them, “Do you think it is wise to move out here when your friends need you?”

    1. Thank you for posting this, it was amazing from the very first word to the last. So many feelings and emotions. As for the erotic part of the story, these lines were the best: “I slid out of the car. I didn’t look to see if she was following me. I got the confirmation I needed as her heels hit the wood of the stairs.” It somehow sounds very sexy, it must be the atmosphere you created with your writing. Once again, thanks for this brilliant story.

    2. Your command of words just takes my breath away. I have never read anything so beautifully written yet heartbreaking at the same time. You my friend are a wonderful writer.

    3. That was achingly sad, yet it was also hopeful…there really are good people out there in the world, who every once in a while show up at just the right time, giving us just what we need. Thank you for this…beautiful.

    4. So V, how’d you get so wounded and jaded. I quite liked the cop. I wish NYC could recruit a few more professors into their ranks, it would do a world of good. I remember seeing one corner a bad guy in Times Square once (back when it was pimpolicious). As a result of the cop adopting the classic “come to papa” pose, like the bad guy was going to jump into his arms, he took several shoots to the jaw. It was kind of like watching Mrs. Peel in The Avengers and thinking “kick him in the nuts, he’s wide open for it”. Oh well, law enforcement 101.

    5. R, NC17? I dunno, but that’s one of the most poetic R/NC17’s I’ve ever read. The atmosphere was palpable. With all the sadness of episode 9 and what’s to come in the remaining season, this rendition of the main character(s) and their struggles (especially Bette here) is a welcome respite. Look forward to the next one.
