    Heart of Glass: After Parties

Bette looked nervous and annoyed at once.

“Well?” Helena asked, handing a glass of wine over.

    “Well…what?”

Helena rolled her eyes, putting her empty plate down.  She didn’t bother to answer Bette.  Words took too much energy.  She got up instead, walking over to the pool. She still felt strange—like the world was too big suddenly. She fought a sudden urge to fall forward into the pool. Perhaps she should put stones in her pockets, wade out into the ocean. Helena felt the pockets in her jeans with her free hand. Too tight.

    “Helena?”

“oh, sorry, I went away there for a moment.” Helena said with a grin. Bette was frightened by that smile.  Something underneath it was broken, like Tina had said. Bette remembered an artist whose time in the California prison system had inspired a series of jarring photographs.  The last of which, showing three African American women in the federal pen for drug charges under the Reagan era, had inspired the artist’s suicide—the subjects of her photographs provided compelling evidence of their innocence and it had all been too much in the end.

Innocence or not, Bette could not abide by the American prison system.  Of their friends, only Bette, Kit and Shane had some perspective on what Helena had gone through. Tina and, strangely enough, Alice, had merely tried to gloss it all over—to tell Helena absurd things like how good she looked in prison orange.

“I’m just…look, Helena, come here, away from the pool.” Bette waved her over, made her sit down. “What are you doing? Thinking about launching yourself into my pool? Are we going to have to take turns watching you?”

Helena shrugged, sipped her wine. “No. I wouldn’t do that to my friends.”

“Ok, good.” Bette looked at the chiseled cheekbones and long dark hair that had always intimidated her. Like most beautiful women, Bette could not resist the allure of her socialization, and saw others as competition somehow.  Even without Tina in the picture, Helena would have intimidated her.

At a loss for what to say, Bette stared instead at Helena’s hands. She had long fingers. And thin wrists. Bette shook her head, smirking to herself.

    1. No, helebette not gyno anything, I should be so lucky. Echocardiography. I get to see quite a few chests (and whatever may be attached to them, like EKG leads) but mostly they are approaching 80 years old, so few thrills. And I must maintain my professional attitude regardless. But at least I got on A on ultrasound physics tonight! A little more worried about tomorrow’s, and here you are posting, which keeps me from my studies. Oh well, tomorrow’s another day! But in the meantime, I enjoy how this one proceeds, just a little drunk, just a little sly, just a little shy. Now bring me the others! And you, sofa-London Town! We’ve been more than patient. And God knows, I need a Vacation.

    2. I’ve missed your posts big-time! Your explanation for Bette’s not visiting Helena in jail makes perfect sense. And I appreciate your acknowledging the emotional repercussions of the prison experience (I won’t be surprised if IC treats it as a big joke in Season 5). I love the tentative dance Bette and Helena are engaged in, and I hope this “fun tension” phase of their relationship isn’t short-lived. I’ve been impatiently waiting for four years and I still haven’t heard a single Belena comment escape IC’s lips, so what is the “mocking reference” to? Delighted to hear that your five stories are “in the works” because I’m mighty attached to them all.

    3. Oooh, so close…. If Bette hadn’t come down with an awful, sudden case of foot-in-mouth disease, they could’ve gone there. Pity. Wonder how she’ll fix that gaffe, silly woman. Hels is the forgiving type it seems, so maybe she’ll let it slide… Or not. Very nice, hb, very nice. More as you can please, thanks!

    4. I don’t like Tilena =P because of Tina, In a way I think she used Helena, to get back at Bette and I didn’t like Helena because she was Bette’s enemy (rolling eyes) but who knows, maybe you can change my mind heheh… This chapter was AMAZING!!! Bette’s explanation was perfect, I loved it!!! PPS
