Chapter 23 – Back to Work
Tina looks over again at Anna as her daughter sits in her highchair pounding her little fists on the tray. She was pounding away as Tina whirled around the kitchen trying to think if she had missed anything. Today was her first day back to work since Annas birth. Since the au pair still had one week before she arrived, Tina has employed a home daycare service for the week. The woman had yet to arrive and Tina was hoping to have a few minutes to make sure all was in place for one last time. She had run through all of these details last night but still it gave her a small measure of comfort to recheck it all again. With everything still where she had left it the previous night, Tina picks up Anna and carries her into the living room and places her in her jump about. Placing all her toys in the tray so she will be hopefully occupied for the next 10 minutes.
Now Anna, your Mom has to get dressed if she has any hope of getting out of here today. You be a good girl as I will be in the bathroom. Tina tells her girl who just looks up at her Mom as if she really understands every word.
Laughing Tina just straightens up and moves towards the bathroom, she only has another 20 minutes before the sitter arrives and she needs to get a move on. It all seemed to be happening so fast today. It just seemed like yesterday that Anna was born and the two month leave seemed long enough. Before Tina knew it the door bell was ringing and Tina was letting in her help for today. Running through all the instructions and emergency numbers, food and bottles, what Annas favorite things, her toys and where the extra diapers were took all of Tinas spare time and now it was time to go.
Standing in the front door, Tina just looked at her baby as the sitter picked her up and waved her little hand at Tina in goodbye. With tears in her eyes, Tina tore herself away and ran to her car. She needed to get out of here before she lost her resolve and threw the sitter out and stayed home for good.

Those words brought tears to my eyes remembering how hard it was to leave my daughter after the maternity leave was up! I don’t know of many moms who successfully manage to arrive at work the first day back without loosing their mascara! Thanks for that!

Methinks that Bette wants to be doing some other kind of cooking with Anna’s mom after Anna goes to bed…but I think that’s a part for a little longer down the line. Nicely done.
