    Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)

“You’ll always be my Dad,” Tina said aloud, wiping at her tears. How could her father do this to her? She wished miserably that she’d never had this stupid idea. She should have known that her father would never understand. His repulsive prejudice cut her to the core.

Maybe he would see the error of his thinking. Maybe he never would. He was a careless man when it came to his family, and their relationship had been far from a storybook ideal, but he had never betrayed Tina like this before.

Time passed and Tina knew she was late for work, but she didn’t care. All cried out now, Tina’s thinking switched from her father to Bette, who was never far from foremost in her thoughts. She was going to have to tell Bette about her father. How was Tina going to break it to her?

Days passed and neither Tina nor Bette brought up Thanksgiving again. Finally as the day drew closer, Bette tentatively mentioned it. It was obvious that things hadn’t gone well for either of them and their fathers, but Bette felt like she should say something, lest Tina think she was ignoring the issue. Over dinner one night, as they were making the usual small talk about their day, she said, “So. I guess we’re not making any plans to leave L.A. this Thanksgiving?”

Tina shook her head and picked at her food. “I don’t think so.” She looked up, curious. “Unless your father -”

    Bette shook her head. “No.”

“Well that’s that,” Tina said with a sad smile. “It was just an idea I had.”

    “It wasn’t a bad one.”

“No… anyway, I’ll cook a little something, just for the two of us. Our first Thanksgiving should be a special one.”

“Let’s just have pie and forget the rest,” Bette said. “That’s the best part, anyway.”

    “Apple?”

    Bette shook her head. “Pumpkin.”

Tina smiled, and Bette was relieved to see a smile return to her face. “Pumpkin it is, then.”

“T? Come in here, there’s something I want to show you,” Bette called from the living room. She was sitting on the couch in front of the TV, which was unusual for her. Tina came in and sat down next to her, looking at the screen dubiously. “You want to show me football? You hate football.”

    1. Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)

    2. Poignant…truthful, with the tinge of hope and joy. Thanks for reminding us that Thanksgiving is about love. Well done OMalley! You’re the queen of holiday stories. :)

    3. Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks

    4. That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx

    5. Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
