“So soon?” Tina asked, grasping her glass. “But what could you possibly have to report already? You’ve barely arrived. Or were we not supposed to mix business with pleasure this evening?” Tina asked warily, but with a grin as she raised her flute.

Grinning back, Bette raised her glass and clinked it against Tina’s. “We can mix whatever we like tonight, Tina. Shall we drink to ‘mixing’?”

“To ‘mixing’,” Tina said softly, rubbing the rims of their glasses together before sipping.

“Seems this is one assignment I lucked out on,” Bette said softly.

Their eyes met and gazed into one another’s.

Within an instant, they were interrupted.

“Hey, Babycakes! Hey, Cuz!” Alice’s eyes twinkled down on Bette and Tina. Beside her, the beautiful Helena Peabody clutched Alice’s arm and smiled. “Hey, Hels, this is Tina Kennard, my cousin and partner. She runs this joint. But not without my approval on anything and everything. Right, Cuz? And this is Helena Peabody. Ain’t thata name for ya?” Alice chuckled and snorted. “And this is Tina’s new friend…um…what was your name, Babycakes?”

“This is Bette Porter, Ms. Peabody,” Tina said, extending her hand. “It’s very nice to make your acquaintance.”

Helena shook Tina’s hand and then Bette’s.

“And it’s lovely to meet the both of you, I’m sure,” Helena replied.

“What a perfectly melodic accent you have, Ms. Peabody,” Bette said, quickly taking the opportunity to address the woman with questions. “Did you grow up in London?”

“Why, yes, I did, Ms. Porter,” Helena answered. “Have you been there?”

“Often, but not often enough as I’d like, I’m afraid,” Bette replied, smiling brightly. “I find everything about it enchanting.”

“Well, it’s an enchanting city. How about you, Ms. Kennard? Ever been to London?”

“Many times,” Tina said, not quite sure how friendly she should appear with the English woman. Nor did she know how much information she should offer. She looked at Bette askance.

“How long are you here in Las Vegas, Ms. Peabody?” Bette inquired.

The Brit flipped her hair and said, “As long as I enjoy the desert heat. As enchanting as London can be, it’s so dreary this time of year.”

“Yes, I seem to remember it as such,” Bette responded.

“I love to escape to Vegas,” Helena smiled, rubbing her hand up and down Alice’s arm.

    1. Careful, Bette. Don’t scare Helena away. Alice is like a combination of Warner Brothers stock characters from the 30s. Equal parts their standard show girl and their standard gangster.

    2. Nice one, again! (: Laughs. Helena Peabody. Hmmm. Ok. Sorry. Laughs. Another lovely effort by the both of you. So wonderfully written. ((: Can’t wait to see what more you both have in store for us! ((: PPS! (:

    3. Alice is enough to embarass anyone besides she is a fool. She was not funny in the least, the innuendo alone was enough for Helena to have walked off and left her standing there. She will be the one to blow their cover. pps

    4. Wonderful :). You are so right, I hardly drink champagne because I’m not fond of it at all…somehow the bubbles are making me somewhat uneasy, but if I do have to buy it I prefer a bottle of Tattinger over a Dom Perignon too, however nothing can beat a nicely chilled white Châteauneuf-du-pape for me lol. Your Alice had me in stitches Babycakes, Sweetiepuss hahaha I could so see her before me. Bette did get Helena uncomfortable, I wonder if this is the right approach…take it easy Bette or she will escape. The sexual tension between Bette and Tina is palpable…let’s see some action on the dancefloor mmmmm. Love this story very much already.
