Driftnight – Part III: Break of Day
“I know, baby,” Lara said, slipping both of her arms around Shane’s shoulders and resting her head in the hollow of Shane’s throat. “You really want that next album, don’t you.”
“Yeah, I do,” Shane said softly, reaching up to lightly stroke Lara’s forearm with her fingertips as she turned her head, dropping a quick kiss to Lara’s bright red hair. “He’s trying to get me a shot at best indie album this year. He says I could really do it this time, L.”
“Well, if he thinks you could, then you should totally go for it, baby. You know I’m behind you all the way,” Lara purred, smiling sweetly as she lifted her head and kissed Shane’s cheek.
Turning her head, Shane brushed her lips against Lara’s cheek, smiling softly against her skin. “You’re my sweet, sweet Carolina ba-by,” she began, her husky voice effortlessly turning the words into a simple and impossibly endearing melody, though it wasn’t one that Jenny had ever heard before. It sounded almost like an old classic-rock style lullabye best served with the kind of delicate banjo-style picking Lindsey Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac might do. “My red-haired, blue-eyed darling la-dy…”
The impromptu serenade seemingly had the desired result as Lara’s cheeks flushed bright pink and she giggled softly as she buried her face in the crook of Shane’s throat. Shane chuckled but continued to hum the melody of the song as she nuzzled Lara’s cheek, reaching up to gently stroke her back. “You always do that,” she murmured, sounding amused but surprised at the same time.
“Hearing you sing that always makes me blush,” Lara replied very softly as she reached up, fingertips toying with the tiny cross pendant dangling from a chain around Shane’s neck. “You know it does.”
“Hmm,” Shane hummed in amused acknowledgement, lips resting tenderly against Lara’s forehead.
Jenny hadn’t expected to see the two of them being so affectionate – almost loving – with one another, but watching the two of them from her far-off table, she found herself completely enthralled. As far as she knew, there was never any mention in the press of Shane being involved with anyone but it was obvious that Shane and Lara had been seeing each other for some time, judging by the familiarity and warmth that was evident between them.
