Driftnight – Part III: Break of Day
The music was deceptively simple… round, droning organ notes, each one flowing into the next seamlessly. The screen was blank, black, and then it finally flicked to life – the film stock noticeably grainy and slightly overexposed, as though it had been filmed on an old 8mm camera – the camera coming into focus in what appeared to be a small room. The floors were wooden and the walls were some dark color, though what shade was hard to say, because the video had been shot in black and white; Jenny could see that as the next shot appeared.
Shane, sitting with her back against the wall, having tucked her tall frame into a corner, long legs drawn up to her chest. She was dressed in a white wifebeater that clung to her and thin, white baggy pants of some kind, her feet bare. Something about that little detail made Jenny almost uneasy — the vulnerability of her, sitting there that way.
Shane’s left arm was folded across her bent knees, while the elbow of the other rested atop her left hand. The fingers of her right hand pinched at the bridge of her nose, her eyes closed – lashes laying like sooty fans against her cheeks, thanks to the stark lighting. And yet, it all suited her – and the music as well. She was shot from a height, at a slight angle off to her left, but she didn’t appear small. Somehow, she even seemed bigger than the room, even though the camera hadn’t taken a pass to reveal the size of it.
"You… speak… so… slow-ly…" Shane’s voice wasn’t quite a whisper – her usually husky voice was far too deep to manage that and still be as smooth and soft as it was on this track.
The organ continued, taking up a simple, plodding procession of notes and the shot changed, Shane in profile, her aquiline nose casting a shadow across her cheek as she finally moved her hand, raking it through the thick, black shock of her hair. She reached down, rubbing at her nose, looking disinterested, bored, and Jenny couldn’t help but wonder if these were outtakes from the original shoot rather than the actual footage they’d set out to shoot. It had an off-the-cuff quality to it, very organic and real. Revealing in a way that had surprised Jenny, at first.
