Crossover Challenge: Long Standing Woman 2
Tina shrugged, raised her hands helplessly, looked to the ceiling, the floor, anywhere, for help with the contradictions within her. “No…I mean what does that even matter? Its you I want, so no…I don’t want to see other people, I want to see you…to really see you. But I need the same commitment from you as well.”
Bette shook her head, ignoring her own confusion momentarily, and said the first thing that came to mind in response. “I need you not to leave.” Bette choked. “I need to know that you won’t just dangle the threat over me, like last time.”
Tina smiled and moved over to lay down, side by side with Bette. “I can’t promise that I’ll never leave.” She whispered. “No one can promise that. But I can promise that I’ll love you, and be with you. But you, you trap yourself in this quest to keep people with you forever, and it just doesn’t work like that.”
“So you’re the expert on how it all works?” Bette asked, echoing herself in a way that made her think she had said those words before, to someone else. Or, somehow, that she would always say those words, wondering exactly how this was all done.
“I’m no expert.” Tina said firmly. She gentled her response with a smile then:
“But I’m willing to learn with you at my side.” She added laughingly, “Maybe we’ll be one of the great love stories, like…you know, that red headed actor and Hepburn…”
“Oh no, not like them.” Bette wrinkled her nose and shook her head. “They were both gay and he pushed her around, or maybe he just drank a lot. How about Bogart and Bacal?”
“Sartre and Beauvoir?” Tina said, shaking her head as well. She did not want to compete with some other poor woman for the next twenty years.
Bette paused. “Do I have to be Sartre? He wasn’t very attractive. Then again, I don’t want you to be Sartre. Maybe we can be like Garbo and whichever woman she shagged the longest.”
Tina laughed as Bette broke out in the grin that so characterized her.
“What if we become attracted to other people again?” Bette asked seriously.

I like that Tina thinks she can stand on her own two feet, but I think she’s trying to get Bette to do a whole co-dependency, without really being dependent thing (if that makes sense) which will be really hard for Bette because she’s so used to taking care of someone and not being taken care of..ya know? Whatev, I liked it. I’m happy as a hooker in dickland that you posted. PPS
Wonderful: if only the show were a fraction as charming and psychologically acute. Bette’s fears stem from her abandonment issues IMO. It’s a tough hurdle to overcome. IIRC I first encountered the Tracy/Hepburn gay thesis in a Vanity Fair article. Loved the way you worked it in here.
Aw shucks helebette, how winsome! Such sweetness eminating from the mistress of snark and gore. I guess that means you’re well rounded.
I hear Spencer Tracy was the kind who the MGM dicks had to search out periodically when he’d disappear, only to be found drunk and maudlin, seated in the bathtub of some cheap hotel, from which he would not have moved since he checked in with a suitcase of booze, besmirched by a myriad of his own bodily excretions. Is that better or worse than when he’d stick closer to home and punch ol’ Katie around from time to time?
lol…i think its better, funnyone. at least he hurt himself then, and not the lesbian he used as his beard. but…well…gross…that makes me like his acting even less now. and i never liked it in the first place, so…bah.
hb, I’m looking forward to this, but a pathology final tonight beckons me to study-I have to bone up on my tumors so to speak. Later.
I just can’t get enough of this journey they have begun. Hope it doesn’t take too long before you post again. Thanks for this fine writing.
superb!!!!
Excellent narrative. I did not know that about Tracy & Hepburn. The ideal is shattered. PPS.
Wow, I really like the idea of Tina writing a script. So when will her movie be released in Europe ? lol !! I’m sure it will be the cinema-vérité kind. By the way, can you imagine I had no idea that K. Hepburn was gay ? Anyway, I really enjoyed the chapter, Hb. You certainly have a way with words and I love the pretty “realistic” way in which you addressed this story. I really appreciate, that and all the more so as we all know this ship is not really your cup of… “coffee”. LOL ! Great job !
Hmn, I love the idea of Tina finding some peace in writing and getting to the point where she can be relaxed enough to not let Bette’s little nuances drag her down, now …. you know I love Tina (when she’s portrayed like a normal person and not a crazy beatch) so two thumbs up from me *grin* … and Angie is just cuteness
So, so good, hb. I like that Bette realises letting go isn’t the end of the world. Control isn’t everything. And I loved the last line of the story… Now then, I’m not sure, but did you ever clarify what that “one last thing” was (from the first part)? Maybe I need a re-read to see if you did. Anyway, I really, really liked that. And now I need to catch up Life Happens. Cheers, hb!
