Crossover Challenge: Long Standing Woman 2
The morning sun made strange designs on the ceiling; light reflected and bounced through curtains and against mirrors, bathing the room.
Tina sat up in bed, gazing quietly at Bette as she slept. The sheets, white and a little stiff, fell lightly across her waist. Bette still slept on her stomach most of the time, her back exposed.
A myriad of emotions and memories flooded through Tina. It was strange, because for the first time in years, she felt fully at peace. She knew what she needed to do, to maintain her self of individuality within this relationship, and she also knew how greatly she needed Bette.
It was just…well, she worried that things might slip backwards, somehow.
Last night had been the most passionate, fufulling night in the recent memories of either woman. Tina wanted to build from there, rather than on the mistakes of the past.
Bette’s eyes opened slowly—she was painfully aware of the brightness of the sun, which obscured her vision until her eyes adjusted. Then she registered that Tina was sitting and staring at her, a curious expression upon her face.
“are you all right?” Bette asked wearily. She had certainly conditioned herself to expect people to leave in the morning, she thought wryly to herself. Bette took a deep breath calming herself for Tina’s response.
“I’m fine…great…I just want to talk is all…whatever happened last night, I just need to say…I want to maintain my freedom.” That didn’t come out right. Tina’s voice sounded too much like pleading, especially to her own ears. She cleared her throat, lowered her head, took a deep breath and started again. If Bette could only quell the fear that had risen within her, sensed easily by the woman who knew her best, they could move through this. But somehow, the need to control, to guide, to structure, to contain stretched from Bette like tentacles. Her energy dominated, snaked across the floor, and wound its way around Tina’s chest. So Tina took an even deeper breath: “I want you, I want to love you, to be with you…but I need to be free.”
“What does that mean?” Bette’s voice sounded small. Small, and wounded—her memories had already slipped to a time once before when her world had crashed around her. It felt like dying, then, and it felt like dying now. Yet, through it, she listened, as best she could, for somehow, her life depended on it. “Do you want to see other people?”

I like that Tina thinks she can stand on her own two feet, but I think she’s trying to get Bette to do a whole co-dependency, without really being dependent thing (if that makes sense) which will be really hard for Bette because she’s so used to taking care of someone and not being taken care of..ya know? Whatev, I liked it. I’m happy as a hooker in dickland that you posted. PPS
Wonderful: if only the show were a fraction as charming and psychologically acute. Bette’s fears stem from her abandonment issues IMO. It’s a tough hurdle to overcome. IIRC I first encountered the Tracy/Hepburn gay thesis in a Vanity Fair article. Loved the way you worked it in here.
Aw shucks helebette, how winsome! Such sweetness eminating from the mistress of snark and gore. I guess that means you’re well rounded.
I hear Spencer Tracy was the kind who the MGM dicks had to search out periodically when he’d disappear, only to be found drunk and maudlin, seated in the bathtub of some cheap hotel, from which he would not have moved since he checked in with a suitcase of booze, besmirched by a myriad of his own bodily excretions. Is that better or worse than when he’d stick closer to home and punch ol’ Katie around from time to time?
lol…i think its better, funnyone. at least he hurt himself then, and not the lesbian he used as his beard. but…well…gross…that makes me like his acting even less now. and i never liked it in the first place, so…bah.
hb, I’m looking forward to this, but a pathology final tonight beckons me to study-I have to bone up on my tumors so to speak. Later.
I just can’t get enough of this journey they have begun. Hope it doesn’t take too long before you post again. Thanks for this fine writing.
superb!!!!
Excellent narrative. I did not know that about Tracy & Hepburn. The ideal is shattered. PPS.
Wow, I really like the idea of Tina writing a script. So when will her movie be released in Europe ? lol !! I’m sure it will be the cinema-vérité kind. By the way, can you imagine I had no idea that K. Hepburn was gay ? Anyway, I really enjoyed the chapter, Hb. You certainly have a way with words and I love the pretty “realistic” way in which you addressed this story. I really appreciate, that and all the more so as we all know this ship is not really your cup of… “coffee”. LOL ! Great job !
Hmn, I love the idea of Tina finding some peace in writing and getting to the point where she can be relaxed enough to not let Bette’s little nuances drag her down, now …. you know I love Tina (when she’s portrayed like a normal person and not a crazy beatch) so two thumbs up from me *grin* … and Angie is just cuteness
So, so good, hb. I like that Bette realises letting go isn’t the end of the world. Control isn’t everything. And I loved the last line of the story… Now then, I’m not sure, but did you ever clarify what that “one last thing” was (from the first part)? Maybe I need a re-read to see if you did. Anyway, I really, really liked that. And now I need to catch up Life Happens. Cheers, hb!
