Comfort Enough
“Did you forget your keys?” Bette asked, opening the front door to reveal Shane standing on her Welcome mat.
They looked at each other wordlessly for a long minute until Bette said, “I thought you were Tina.”
“I kind of figured,” Shane replied, pushing her hands a little deeper into her jacket pockets. She did her best to keep her face expressionless but couldn’t quell the flicker of discomfort in her eyes.
“Do you want to come in? She’ll be home any minute,” Bette said, opening the door a little wider.
Shane stood unmoving, weighing her options. “Sure,” she said finally, stepping inside.
“So,” Bette said, smiling uneasily.
Shane nodded. “So. How’ve you been, Bette?”
“Good. How about you?”
“Real good. Thanks.”
They were five feet and a thousand miles away from each other, and suddenly, Shane was wishing that she’d waited for Tina outside. After months of no contact with Bette and then the few awkward group lunches that Alice had forced them into, Shane didn’t have anything to say to this woman. Or maybe she had so much to say that she couldn’t figure out how to put the words together.
“How about a beer?” Bette asked, raising her eyebrows.
“Yeah. That’d be excellent.”
Shane followed Bette into the kitchen, where she could see that dinner preparations were well under way.
“Um. I can come by another time if you’re” Shane said, hesitating in the doorway.
“No. Please stay. It’s really great to see you.”
Bette opened two beers and handed one to Shane.
“To Tina,” Shane said, raising her bottle and looking at Bette pointedly.
“Tina,” Bette echoed, taking a long swallow.
At about the same moment when Shane was convinced that things couldn’t get more awkward, Bette cleared her throat and started talking.
“Look. I’m not proud of what I did. And I don’t expect anybody to forgive me or try to understand. I don’t even completely understand it. But I hope that maybe over time you’ll be able to trust me again. That’s what I’ve asked from Tina. And that’s what I’m asking you.”
Shane considered this request as she took another drink. She was about to respond when she heard the front door open.

Loved this. Tina doen’t realize how well she and Bette are getting alone.
Such a joy to read.
I know that I shouldn’t get my hopes up…but this just left me with such a big goofy grin. It was so nice to see them teetering on the edge of normalcy.
enjoing this, please continue, good job
Yes, so enjoyed this and so looking forward to the next one. Please post soon. Thanks.
It’s the normal things, like cooking dinner, that makes life happy and content. It’s always a breath of fresh air to read you post!
Wow – if you didn’t know their history you’d think this was just normal. Wonder how long it will take T to realise – and how much she’ll resist it?! :-)
wonder how long will Tina take to step out from the pain and realise what’s in front of her.. but at least from the previous chapter she did the right thing for leaving Helena. short, simple and sweet reunion..i like it. waiting for the next chapter!
how great watching B&T thru shanes eyes. shane can see the majic is still there. hopefully tina will see it soon.

Great chapter, I really like the easy flow of conversation and that you have taken the time to give us a view of a normal dinner…thanks
of course she is..im glad they are rebuilding their relationship..baby steps nad its good to see shane trying too..great chapter FFC im love your story..post soon thanks :o)
NIce, very nice. Just Bette and Tina being Bette and Tina even if for awhile it only comes in momentary spurts. Good for Shane that she at least got to witness some of what always made the rest of them feel safe and secure. I think Tina ending it with Helena while she figures this all out was one of the smartest things she finally could have done.
I feel where Shane is coming from. B & T have always been the glue that kept everyone together; without them, they all started falling apart. I think seeing them together is just what Shane needed.
Great Update…post again
