Civil Love-Chap 11
“That old coot Peabody is going to die soon. With Michael marrying Helena, it would only ensure us the land and all their worth. With Michael in there, no one can come and take over the land.”
“Do you think that Peggy is going to sit there and just let you in there to run things? Ha, woman, you’re funny!”
Constance didn’t like her husband making fun of her. If he wasn’t going to do something about that slave causing problems, she would. At the Peabody’s party, she would find one of the slave men, and pay him to force himself on Bette. That would put her in her place and teach her a lesson she wouldn’t soon forget.
Melvin sat at the kitchen table watching his wife prepare dinner for their masters and the Peabodys. Tonight was the night that he was planning to move more slaves than he ever had before. He knew why he did it, but was doing it worth risking his life and his family? Having Young Michael find out was not good. Melvin trusted no whiteys. He knew when push came to shove, they would always turn on you.
“Where’s Lizzy?” he asked his wife.
“She went to take Tina on her horse ride. Isn’t about time you left to go take the Peabodys that invitation?”
“Yes.”
As Melvin headed out, he was still thinking about the huge risk he was taking that night.
Bette pulled the saddle string of the horse that Tina was riding. They were a distance from the house. The ride was quiet. Neither one had much to say.
“Bette, please stop right here.”
Bette looked around. The area was surrounded by many huge trees. It was a very isolated spot. Bette stopped the horse and helped Tina off. She walked the horse over to a tree and tied him tightly. When she turned around, Tina had spread out the blanket to lie down on.
“Please come join me, Bette,” Tina said.
“I’m fine here, Miss………”
“Bette, please, there’s no one out here with us. Can you please stop calling me Miss? I’m Tina. Now please…come here and sit with me.”
Cautiously, Bette moved over to the blanket and knelt down.
“Have you ever just looked up at the blue skies and imagined what was out there?” Tina began.
Bette decided to lie down and looked out into space with Tina.
“All the time. Sometimes I wish that I was far away from here, up there.”
Tina pushed up on her side and rested her head in her hand as she looked down at Bette.
“You don’t like it here with me?”
Bette took her time to answer Tina’s question. She didn’t want to argue with her or hurt her.
“Miss……I mean Tina, you and your family are great to my family, but to my people overall, you are not. I just wish that we all could go far away from here and be free.”
“Then if you do that, I would be alone. I would be without you, Bette.”
Bette turned to look at Tina. She didn’t expect to see tears, she didn’t expect to see hurt in her owner’s eyes. Bette turned and reached to wipe the tears away, but before she could, Tina caught her hand and placed it on her chest.
“Do you feel how fast my heart is beating? Do you know that it beats this fast each time I’m around you? Bette, I don’t understand what I’m feeling for you, but I can’t fight it any longer.”
Tina slowly lowered her head towards Bette’s mouth. She had been waiting to feel her lips again; been waiting to taste her again.
When Bette’s warm, soft lips touched hers, her heart skipped a beat. She was not experienced in kissing, but somehow when she kissed Bette, her lips had a mind of their own. As the kiss got deeper, the two began to moan. Parts of their bodies were aching to be touched.
Just a few steps away, behind one of the huge trees, stood Helena and Candace. Helena had seen everything.

I absolutely LOVE this story!!! I just started it tonight and couldn’t stop reading it!! Please post soon :)
I am a late comer and got to read all the chapters of this story. All I have to say is that it is simply brilliant. Definitely a hard story to write and it brings tears to my eyes simply because it is a sad part of American history and the history of the African-American people. I thank you for taking a chance to write this and staying true to the times and circumstances surrounding the slavery era. When I started reading it, I’ll admit it was hard just like when I watched the movie ‘Roots’ because it is a painful reminder of the suffering and tragedy of a people. Heartwrenching but definitely a story worth telling. I pray you continue writing this story for you are truly a talented writer willing to push the boundaries to keep the story honest and real.
