Civil Love-Chap 11
Previously
Tina was shocked at how easily Michael had gone along with her. She thought that maybe she would have to do more persuading.
“Good–I will let Ma and Pa know, and then send one of the boys over with the invitation.”
Tina got up and headed straight outside and called out to Bette, who was deep in thought about everything what was happening. When Bette didn’t respond, she ran after her and, when she got close enough, grabbed her by the shoulder and turned her around quickly, furious at being snubbed.
“Don’t ignore me, gal!”
Bette, puzzled at this actions, said, “Miss Christina, what are you talking about?”
“Bette, were you kissing my brother?”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
“What?” Bette responded back in a tone a slave knows will earn a beating.
“What is going on with you and Michael? You are very close. If I didn’t walk in when I did, you two would have been kissing!”
“That is crazy! Whiteys don’t kiss us. That is just wrong…”
“So are you saying that what happened a few days ago between us was wrong? Dirty?”
“No…….Miss, if you’re ready to go riding, I will fetch the horse.”
Bette walked right past Tina and went to fetch the horse. But before she could get completely away, Tina grabbed her arm.
“We will talk about this later.”
Constance stood there, looking out the window of her room, watching the whole exchange between Tina and the colored girl. She had to get Tina away from her. And she had to teach Bette a lesson.
“Dear husband, it’s way past time for Bette to start producing babies. We have to continue to build.”
“Constance, we went over this already. We have to see what President Lincoln is going to do. If he frees the slaves, those babies will not be useful to us.”
“If President Lincoln knows what’s good for him, he’ll leave us alone down here! And if he doesn’t, the men are ready to fight for our rights. Jackson, we need to take our life back. We can’t sit around here and wait.”
“Constance, dear, what else would you like for me to do? I have already gone along with letting Michael run the Peabody’s plantation instead of his own.”

I absolutely LOVE this story!!! I just started it tonight and couldn’t stop reading it!! Please post soon :)
I am a late comer and got to read all the chapters of this story. All I have to say is that it is simply brilliant. Definitely a hard story to write and it brings tears to my eyes simply because it is a sad part of American history and the history of the African-American people. I thank you for taking a chance to write this and staying true to the times and circumstances surrounding the slavery era. When I started reading it, I’ll admit it was hard just like when I watched the movie ‘Roots’ because it is a painful reminder of the suffering and tragedy of a people. Heartwrenching but definitely a story worth telling. I pray you continue writing this story for you are truly a talented writer willing to push the boundaries to keep the story honest and real.
