    Bette’s Dilemma-Pandora’s Envelope

"Eight years is a long time T but the damage that was done to Hodie’s hearing is wasn’t gradual. Its not genetic. It was the result of trauma- it’s physical it has improved as much as it will and it won’t worsen with time."

"But Hodie was born deaf…" Tina began and then the realization that all she had believed to be true about her rival for Bette’s love was now in question.

Aware that the mix of alcohol and emotion had left her feeling more unprepared for the decisions that lay ahead than she wanted Bette got slowly to her feet as she spoke, "I’m going to put the kettle on T, while I’m doing that take a look at the pages I set aside. As she watched Bette’s back retreat into the kitchen Tina struggled to decide whether she wanted to know what lay in the pages that sat on the table in front of her or not. Bette’s mood had shifted ever so slightly as she had read these pages, whatever they contained filled Tina with apprehension. Seconds ticked by as Tina eventually decided that she had to know. Bette would need her to understand. Reaching out she retrieved the paper and slowly began to read the details of Hodie Lerner’s young life. It was a tale of a 6 year old girl brutally attacked and violated on her way home from a forbidden trip to a neighbourhood park . The story of a young girl beaten so badly her inner ears were ruptured, robbed of her hearing when she fought off her attacker, determined to stop her from telling anyone what he had done. He had succeeded at least in part. Hodie had retreated into the frightening new world of the hearing impaired unable to communicate as she had before. Eventually, the report showed that Hodie had learned to communicate again but by then it would have been far easier to make the decision that it was better this way–to be deaf. She would never have to talk about what happened again, she would never have to say her shame aloud. No one would force her to, she knew that their pity would stop them. Later medical reports – tests that Hodie had done privately- some of the initial damage was only temporary and some of her hearing must have returned. Then just as Hodie was preparing for her first year of art school her parents were killed in a car accident. Hodie had gone to school that fall despite everything, she walked away from everything, started a new life, literally reinventing herself no longer with anyone to contradict her version of reality.

    1. B&T as a team will always win their battles. It is when their decisions have been one sided, that they have lost the challenges in life. Next: The confrontation to Jodi. Wow! That will be very difficult to handle in a cool manner. Both need to outsmart Jodi. Otherwise, her manipulating character will instigate the pity from others in order to punish Bette. Thanks for this magnificent update. PPS. – Lucero & Marsha – From Mexico City

    2. Do u mean to call her Hodie? Anyway I have ‘a lot’ (note 2 words not one) of sympathy for Jodie and can see how she’d use the deafness to benefit herself. Bette is generous & possibly very wise to allow Jodie the chance to back off however I suggest Bette gets that in writing & that she hands Phylis & the authorities at the University a copy of Monique’s report just to make sure she doesn’t continue this charade elsewhere.

    3. Sometimes I wish that I could hide from my past. Bette has the ammunition to stop jodi from destroying her life. I hope that when Bette takes this information to jodi that she will back off and Bette does not have to reveal what Monique has dug up.

    4. Ok, I am sorry for Jodie’s past and all that happened to her; but, Bette… Squash that b*tch like bug! She’s trying to ruin your life and career. Have no mercy for her. She obviously has none for you. Expose her mother%^$%ing @ss. I would; because she’s p*ssed me off.

    5. Now, that’ I’ve managed to calme myself down a bit, I’ll advise Bette to gshare the information with her and give her the chance to retract her statements about Bette. If she refuses… see above comment. =)

    7. This saying fits your story. People that live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Glad that Tina will be with Bette when she confronts Jodie. I think Jodie will feel that she can talk her way out of it with Bette, but she hasn’t had to deal with Tina the Tornado yet. Great story and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Thanks!

    8. Emae29 thank you for your very honest and human reaction. Having readers react so strongly to what I’ve writte encourages me that although this is just fiction it is doing something more. Helping us to think about life

    9. I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT, I just knew she was lying about her disability. Emae29 is right, squash her like the f’ing bug she is. Good riddance. Can hardly wait to see what happens next. PPS

    10. To live a lie for so many yrs. I dont want Bette career wasted,Nor should Jodie, she she should be given the chance to retract her statements. Are Bette will show the paper to the board menbers. We know she didnt give Bette the chance{sour grapes} but Bette and Tina are bigger people. thanks

    11. I really feel sorry for Jodie, poor woman she had to go through all of that, but that doesn’t give her the right to destroy someones life just because things didn’t working the way she wanted them, she should be more understanding, Bette should go with option B and meet her and tell her to withdrawal the accusations. Thanks dear, you have a great story going here.

    12. I can see why Bette wouldn’t want to dredge the past up on Jodi, but Jodi brought this on herself. I am glad for Bette’s sake that she is going to give Jodi an option on the outcome.
