Bette, T, and baby make three Ch. 2
Bette: (shocked)”Why not?”
Tina: “I just don’t think I want to have a bi-racial baby.”
Bette: “Are you kidding me? Are you saying there’s something wrong with a bi-racial baby? With me?”
Tina: “God no! I just…when I’m out on the street with our baby I don’t want to be judged by the color of the baby’s skin.”
Bette: (Angry)”Tina, YOU are part of an alternative lifestyle relationship. How can you dare be so prejudice as to condemn a relationship between a white person and a black person? How the ***** did you think I was raised?”
Tina: “Bette, stop making this personal, it’s not about you….and I’m not prejudice or condemning that type of relationship….I’m just concerned about what everyone else might think.”
Bette: “Since when did you care what other people thought?”
Tina: “Since we began talking about bringing a child into this sometime’s cruel world. I’m also concerned about what our child is going to go through.”
Bette: “Well, don’t you want the child to at least appear to be “ours”? I mean, I will be supporting you in more ways than one and I’ll be raising this child as my own flesh and blood.”
Tina: “This baby will be “ours” but I think I reserve this right as the birthmother….I’m the one sacrificing my body to have “our” child, that doesn’t sound selfish to me. The race of the baby should be my decision….having this baby is going to change my life forever.”
Bette: “You ARE being selfish….and don’t you think it will change my life too? or are you just intentionally trying to make this baby all yours and then I can foot the bill. You act like you’re the only one affected here. You can’t ask me to be your partner in this and then shut me out of all the decisions.”
Tina: “I’m not shutting you out of all the decisions. I’m just standing firm on this one.”
Bette: “I can’t believe you’re being so cold…I hate it when you act this way.”
Tina: (furiously shouting)”Well, I didn’t ask for this…you kissed me first remember?”
Bette: (tears streaming down her cheeks)”Oh nice, T. Just ***** wonderful…so what are you saying that the last 7 years were just a goddamned mistake that you played along with.”

I agree, Tina is being selfish. Great chapter.
Tina is not right in here, poor Bette!
Tina: “This baby will be “ours” but I think I reserve this right as the birthmother….I’m the one sacrificing my body to have “our” child, that doesn’t sound selfish to me. The race of the baby should be my decision….having this baby is going to change my life forever.” –
Ouch!! If I were Bette, I would have been crushed by this…clearly Tina doesn’t feel Bette has any right to be a part of the decision making process involved in the birth of THEIR child. Nor does she care about how having this baby is going to affect Bette’s life. In fact, I can’t see where she has thought about Bette being a part of this, at all. If Bette were a man, would Tina refuse to have his child because of his race? This was a very thought provoking chapter…thanks!!
WOW got to say I agree totaly with seahurst.
Tina is being very harsh. And by saying she doesn’t want a bi-racial child she is rejecting Bette’s heritage. Very thought provoking. Good chapter…post soon.
