Bette, T, and baby make three
Tina: “What?!”
Bette:(sarcastically)”Come on wouldn’t you like that better? Perhaps I can just consider this baby a long-term financial investment and you can just give me monthly pregnancy reports. Then, when the baby is born you can be “mommy” and I’ll be the “silent partner”…..ooh or better yet I can be the financial backer.”
Tina: “I thought we had settled this.”
Bette: “Did we? I’m sorry, Tina, but no matter how much I try I can’t help but feel like you’re pushing me out of this baby’s life….you never explained yourself and other than telling me you wanted to have a baby you really haven’t even involved me in this.”
Tina: “I feel like I have…what do you want me to do or say to make you feel like you’re more than just financing this pregnancy?”
Before Bette can respond the nurse enters. “Tina Kennard?”
Both women put on a happy face and follow the nurse.
Nurse: “You’ll be in examining room number three. Please remove your clothing then put on the gown that has been provided for you and Dr. Wilson will be in to see you shortly.”
The nurse closes the door behind her leaving an awkward silence in the room. Not knowing what to say, Bette helps Tina into her gown, then pats her on the knee.
Bette:(sounding sad and defeated)”I’m going to go wait outside.”
Before Tina can protest Bette walks out of the room. Tina sighs.
After an hour so Dr. Wilson gently nudges Bette to wake up. She has fallen asleep in the waiting room.
Dr. Wilson: “Bette, would you like to come to my office?”
Bette: (groggily)”Sure”
They enter the office and Bette see’s Tina waiting for them.
Dr. Wilson: “Please take a seat, Bette.”
Dr. Wilson sits behind her desk, leans in, and clasps her hands together.
Dr. Wilson: “I’m sure you two have concerns, which is absolutely normal, but what is it that you wanted to discuss?”
Bette and Tina both start to speak interrupting one another. After a moment, Tina continues.
Tina: “Bette and I are having trouble compromising on a donor. We both want the child to represent each of us, so since Bette can’t exactly get me pregnant she suggested we use and African-American donor. However, I’m not comfortable with raising a bi-racial child and I ‘ve made the decision not to use a black donor. But because of this, Bette feels that I am keeping her from making any decisions concerning this baby.”
