Bette — Plan B; pt 47
What’s that called? Famous last words? Alice and I said our goodbyes and I ended the call.
Now what?
Maybe I can see if she’s gotten her homework done. I know she’s coming close to the end of the term.
Then again, if this week does work out, dare I hope that she and Tina might want to return to
Taking in a deep breath to steel my nerves, I knocked on Jess’s door.
“Who is it?”
Great. Now she’s a comedienne. “Jess, do you need any help with your homework?”
“How are you with trig?”
“Uh, I could give it a try.” It’s been years since I’ve done any math that didn’t involve budgeting and accounting. But if she needs the help.
Silence. “That’s ok, it’s done.”
Another test. The question always becomes whether or not I passed. I’m never quite sure which answer would be passing for her. Does she expect that I’ll say no automatically? “Well, if there’s anything I can help with.”
More silence.
Foolishly enough, I wait outside the door for a good ten minutes.
Now what?
It is getting close to dinner time, and I didn’t have a large plate of fries this afternoon. Perhaps it is time to test myself, or at least see what Tina has in the house, ready to go.
And, as I should have guessed, she has many things that look like they did originally. Things like vegetables, meat. All sorts of unprocessed foods. Some things just don’t change, which gives me some amount of comfort in the face of so many things that have changed.
But not comfort at the thought of actually cooking food.
Maybe I shouldn’t make such a decision without consulting Jess. As I’ve seen from her eating habits thus far, they’re anything but consistent, at least in terms of what she won’t eat. I have a feeling that much of her dietary limitations are related to my own choices, or at the least, my presence.
I return to the perpetually closed door and knock lightly. “Jess?”
“What now?”
Always the pleasant one. “Do you have any requests for dinner?”
Another pause.
A long pause.
“Jess?”
“I’m thinking.”
Some days, I really think I’m losing it. I speak without thinking. “Why not come and help me?”
“My mom always cooks for me.”
Doubtful, Jess. Very doubtful. “Jess, can I come in? It’s rather awkward speaking to you through this door.”
I hear shuffling inside. The door opens, and she slips out. “What?”
“Dinner?”
“Why not order in?”
“Would Tina order in?”
I can tell she’s ready to say yes, but I also believe she can tell that I’m not buying it.
“So, are you going to help? At least show me around the kitchen?” Like where the processed, easy-to-prepare food is stashed?
An eyeroll. “Just a second.”
She disappeared back into her room, and there I am, again, in the hall, waiting.
But this is progress? Right?
Now, I was ready to fudge trig. Can I fudge dinner?

Damm lets see if the house burns down, this should be funny.Great update P glad to have it. I for one can’t cook either, I’m house sitting and tonight I went to my house and had my roommate cook me dinner. It’s sad but I surrvie on applejacks and soy milk. I don’t want to cause any damage to the house I’m watching, and I would go the store and get some pre made food except it so far away and I’m lazy. Can’t wait to see Jess and Bette in the same room again
This is great, seeing Jess and Bette interact…well as much as you can through a door!
I’m sure Bette would be a better cook than me! Me and a mate managed to stuff up tacos (we burnt em :S) and then 2 minute noodles! (we put too much water in them then were taking turns at sculling them because we were in the mountains and didnt have forks, we were eating them off sticks from a tuna can, and I realised there were three flies in it!)
Go for the pasta Porter – it’s hard to mess up.
Come on Bette Porter, can’t handle a teenager or dinner. Trust me even with the most determined kid it can be done. Lovin your updates only wish they were longer and a bit quicker. Tv what have you found to watch.
Bette needs to whip this girl into shape! With kids it’s mind over matter: If you don’t make them mind, whatever nice you try to do for them won’t matter.
Jess is a brat! How did Tina let her get that way?
If I was Bette she could eat a peanut butter and jelly sammich and pat her foot while I dined on a steak and a salad.
Don’t get me started…
2 minute noodles: now, there’s an idea! (Thank you, Clair-Bear!)
Bette should toss a pack of Ramen noodles upside her door and call it a night. I’m sure Kit would deliver something nice for Bette to eat. In Peace.
Pseud, these snotty teenagers are making me cranky. Pass me one o’ them bon-bons. I need to sweeten my disposition.
What’s on TV? ‘Empire’ was stinky!
Hmmm, fudge dinner…or maybe fudge FOR dinner!
What’s Jess up to in her room? Is she emailing Tina? Soliciting help from Child Protective Services? She scares me. She really has been allowed to turn in to a snotty brat. I know that she is testing Bette’s sincerity and boundries, but man Tina needs to get that girl back on track.
We don’t mind you communing with small animals as long as they either provide story input or return you to us post haste! Short chapter, but nicely done.
Ok it is official, I can’t read these posts on a daily basis. I always need more. I guess I’ll have to wait for several posts.
ah….communicating with little creatures of nature? Hhmmm, what happened to reality shows? But glad to see bon-bons are still part of your routine.
Almost, I almost feel bad for Bette, but since she was out of Jess life for so long, I kind of like it that she is being “tested”.
I truly believe (or am I being naive) that Tina and Bette will get back together and Jess will be a happy kid.
Great story…..Thank you.
P – you know I love your stories, they always make me smile. Love the different perspectives you weave in each chapter. Thanks so much
I love your story. Can’t wait for more. Please let Jess and Bette talk about the reason why Bette wasn’t there for Jess all those years. Are we ever going to find ot what happened to Kit?
wow pseud. i’ve done an all dayer with your stories. really loved the concept. really enjoy your style of writing. it would be nice if bette and jess bond over something soon, teenages can be so very hard. i know b/t have to question themselves and each other but sometimes, isn’t there a leap of faith somewhere. that might be putting the wagon before the horse tho. tina needs to feel the trust. keep posting often.
WONDERFUL, as always! Whenever you feel like getting off the chaise lounge and updating, it would be appreciated…
this chapter is for anyone who may think they want to be a teenager again…..NOT! thanks for the update. Bette needs to figure out how to get this little b*tch on the right track!
its better call 911 before Bette could cook..and Bette dosent know frozen food???..lol..amazing chapter post soon i cant wait for more
I’m with Techgal, who btw I find pleasantly insane.
What has happened to Bette? Come on Bette, be creative and flip the script…putting Jess on her heels for a change.
Jess she could test the patience of a Saint, ah teenagers!!!
Now for eats i hope they can prepare the food together…i’m sure Tina’s kitchen cupboards will be an aladins cave of ingredients.
Thank you.
K
Great chapter. Just can’t get a break with that kid can she lol. Love it.
I think Jess need to be nice to Bette a little!
