Bed of Lies – Chapter 6

The five of them slipped in and out of conversation, sipping wine and beers, floating aimlessly in the cool water, enjoying the silence and comfort of each others company.

They were interrupted by the sound of the doorbell – their pizza had arrived. Tina could not help but stare at Bette as she got out of the pool. The brunette’s muscular arms pulling her body up, her toned back and firm ass rising above the water, her long lean legs finding solid ground as water sluiced off her entire body. Tina gulped and paddled in another direction, pushing Bette’s retreating figure out of her sight… but not out of her mind.

They decided to eat inside tonight; they had been in the water for a few hours and were walking the line between tipsy and drunk. Bette set up the boxes of pizza by a stack of napkins and they all relaxed in the lounge.

“Hey Bette, you never really said why you came back? And why you were in Philadelphia?” Dana mumbled around a mouthful of pizza.

Bette froze. She knew she had to answer; it had been a week since she had been home. She had to tell them eventually.

“Uh. Yeah. Um… I was in Florence still soaking up the success of the show, a few big pieces had sold and there was interest in a few more… anyway, not the point. I got an urgent message at the gallery where the show was… to call Kit. So I did. She needed me to come home… Daddy was sick.”

“Porter! Why didn’t you tell us before? How is Melvin now?” Alice was furious but concerned.

“I know. I’m sorry; I didn’t want to think about it yet. I was just enjoying being back here with you guys. It felt like home, it felt like normal. I…” Bette sighed and blinked, hoping she would be able to stop the tears that were forming from falling down her face.

“He…uh… he died the day after I got home.”

Silence filled the room. It’s amazing how a non-tangible entity like silence can do that in a physical space. But that’s what happened. It was suffocating and heavy. Impenetrable. Intense. Silent.

Bette felt like she was drowning, the darkness grew and enveloped her. She was lost.

Don’t you know I feel the darkness closing in
Tried to be more than me
And I gave ‘til it all went away
And we’ve only surrendered to the worst part of these winters we’ve made

Alice found her first, pulling her tightly into an embrace, somehow managing to enclose Bette’s longer, larger frame within her smaller one, gripping her firmly as she rested her cheek against the brunette’s. Bette did not even realise she was sobbing until she felt the dampness of Alice’s shirt.

Melvin Porter was not the best father. But her mother had walked out on them when she was 5 so he was the only real parent she had ever known. Her whole life was lived for him, the decisions she made were to impress him. School, college, career. It has broken his heart when she had left an esteemed teaching position at a fine arts college to start her photography career, but her success had won his approval. His approval meant more to Bette than any form of currency ever could. Coming out to him had been the most difficult thing she had ever had to do in her life. And it was the one thorn that continued to force a bleed in their relationship.

12 days ago she had watched the life leave his body. 10 days ago she had watched that body be lowered into the ground, finding his final resting place. His death left her lost, it left her confused, but most of all, and causing the most guilt, it left her free. She hated herself for feeling relief.

Don’t think that I can take another empty moment
Don’t think that I can fake another hollow smile
It’s not enough just to be lonely
Don’t think that I could take another talk about it

    1. Sooo that’s what Bette was hiding. Poor Tina has got it bad. She’s going to have to admit it to herself somtime soon…Eric is just not cutting it for her. Now, it looks like Bette’s interested otherwise she wouldn’t have “engulfed” Tina like that. Nice update TP…need another one soon!

    2. Powerful chapter…Tina’s ability to relax into Bette’s advances communicates volumes – even if she isn’t ready to admit it to herself. Will either Bette or Tina be brave enough to ask the other for a meeting separate from the rest of the family? I also wasn’t expecting Bette’s father to have died – it’s shocking that she could keep that from her family for a whole week. Can’t wait till your next post!

    3. I think the chapter showed another side of Bette. Maybe a little private not wanting to share emotions of love, death, etc. Or at least very hard for her. I think Tina is about to change all of that. pps

    4. Another powerful chapter with such range of emotion. I’m so captivated by your story and am liking the slow burn you have simmering between Bette and Tina.

    5. Wow, I’ve been speed reading through the updates. Not sure how good a job tina is doing playing it cool with Bette. Poor Eric has no clue whats about to happen. That was a heavy load Bette was keeping to herself. I think her and Tina need some alone time, and then Tina can console her.

    6. Bette needed to release the pain and guilt and the best people to listen to her are her friends. I have a feeling that Tina would love to wrap her arms around Bette and I am sure that Bette would love for that to happen.

    7. Bette and Tina’s continued draw to one another is so sexy. I feel terrible for Bette losing her Dad. With a great family like the girls I have faith she will find the love to pull her through.

    8. Hopefully they will have some private time and Tina can hold Bette for a little while. They need the time even if nothing is said yet. Really enjoying this story. PPS

    9. “His death left her lost, it left her confused, but most of all, and causing the most guilt, it left her free. She hated herself for feeling relief.” WOW! Powerful words that describe emotions that not everyone can relate to after the loss of a parent. Everybody grieves in their own way. You can’t blame Bette for feeling a sense of relief. A child never wants to dissappoint. I hope she’ll lean on her friends for support. PS.

    10. here comes the beginning of tina’s confusion espeically if being in bette’s presence so close makes her relax… so being with eric will push her over the edge! :)PPS

    11. Your description of Bette’s feelings surrounding her father’s death was right on point.Sometimes when a loved one is suffering you might wish for them to have some relief. Then, if they pass away, sometimes there is a feeling of guilt. PPS.
