Backstory ~ Lupercalia, a Holiday Story

    February 14, evening

“May we stay in the big bed tonight?”

Bette looked, panicked, at Tina.  Her eyes pleaded with her partner to find a plausible excuse to banish the young potential bedmates who were looking at her so hopefully.

Tina, unhelpfully, returned Bette’s panicked expression.

The three, human and wolf, children sat at the foot of the bed wearing their heart-covered pajamas.  Angelica’s were pink with small white hearts.  The pajama bottoms had been discarded for the wolves.  Little Bit wore red with pink hearts and, in Bette’s concession to gender stereotypes, Trouble wore a navy blue top with a single, very small, white heart. They were adorable and would have been irresistible had Bette and Tina not been looking forward to a private Valentine’s Day evening.

Unable to think of anything herself, and getting no help from Tina, Bette had to employ the explanation that they used sparingly, “Your mamas need some grownup time.”

The mothers watched as their daughter’s wave of facial expressions showed her frustration, her consideration of whether to protest, and her resignation.  They caught each other’s eyes and smiled at her cuteness.

“What did Aunt She Who is a Great Hunter but Cranky say?” Trouble asked.

    “It’s grownup time,” Angelica explained.

    “What is grownup time?”

“I dunno, but my mamas never change their minds when it’s grownup time.”

Tina had moved Bette’s side and whispered, “He asked what ‘grownup time’ is and Angelica told him she doesn’t know but we never change our minds.”

Bette could sense when Tina’s resolve slipped, “We can read you a story first.”

Bette scowled, but since Tina was deliberately not looking at her, her displeased expression had no audience.  She sighed. “Scoot and pick a book.”

“C’mon,” the little girl commanded her cousins as she jumped off the bed and ran to her room.  The wolf pups leaped from the bed to the floor and followed their cousin.

As soon as they disappeared, Tina grabbed Bette’s hand, “I’m sorry.”

“T,” Bette could not hide her frustration.

    “They were irresistible.”

“I had hoped that I was irresistible.”

    1. I forgot that I wanted to mention the musical stylings of a late, great singer named Howlin’ Wolf. “I Put a Spell On You” is a classic and not like anything else you’ve ever heard, although you’ll recognize some things the Rolling Stones, uh, borrowed.

    2. After the day I had at work, this is just what the Dr. ordered. Too funny! I’m sitting her just thinking of Bette running all over the place for the wolf holiday celebration. I love it! More please. :)

    3. Hey Spumoni! Once again your truly sick imagination has me howling. Well, not quite in the same way that B+T howled…but you get what I mean. There are few stories that make me laugh out loud (Ms. Gumby does it to me every time she writes about Donna Kennard) but this story line just cracks me up. I know I owe you one in return and hope to get it out this week. Thanks!

    4. hee hee! Gotta love my Salsa Sisters for getting you to post! I was pleased to see you have gotten over that little block. You done good woman! BRAVO! You are a brilliant writer who brings a very unique style to Fan Fiction. Thanks Spumoni!!!!!

    5. Spumoni I would never skip a single word of your stories much less skip to read every forth! Loved it! Genius!!! Absolutely Brilliant!!! The rivalry between Tina and Red is probably my favorite theme… your timing is wicked and the results are hilarious! Love it, Love it, Love it!!!

    6. Somehow, with all the Dr Seuss books I devoured as a kid, Horton Hatches the Egg was somehow never read by me. Likely cos those and the Peanuts books were always checked out of the school and town libraries… Anyway, I enjoyed this a lot. I’ve been needing a pick-me-up, Spumoni, so thanks for this. Cheers.

    7. I love this, Bette has gone out of her way to make Tina family welcome and very happy, this is the love that goes so deep that Bette has for Tina. I love how Bette and Troubles are so great together,Him climbing in her lap every chance he gets. Tina always get the best of Red. He does admire Bette for grown peopletime alone. Iwas see all the arms and legs while they were rubbing their spines. You could almost hear the low growls and soft moans of all of them. thanks

    8. This is such a hilarious story. My cats are a little nervous of Tina’s extended family. I loved the holiday and all the work that Bette has put into welcoming Tina’s family.

    9. Hi, dear sweet Spumoni! You have left us with such a wide grin here. You know we love this story of yours and an update was needed. Thanks for this precious gift that you are so generous to provide. Gosh! We loved the scenes with the little ones and the “numerous” grown ups time that B&T are having. Hahaha You were brilliant with the Wolf Holiday. It was hilarious! You are doing a fantastic job here. Thanks again for pampering these two ladies here. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. – Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick and Tias Adoradas to Patpez)

    10. I’d always thought of Tina and Bette as feline rather than lupine but definititely feral!! This makes perfectly werid sense – utterly original and hilarious, thanks Spu!

    11. You’ve done it again Spumoni. You’ve given us a look into Bette’s gift of a very active imagination to devise something that would not only gve Tina’s family some excitement but you have provided another means for Bette to show Tina just how much she loves her by providing a break for the wolves. I think that is so special for her to do. Now you can do something for all of us that enjoy your writing so much: please just write another chapter for each holiday for us without being coerced or is that asking too much. Have really enjoyed reading all the back stories you’ve created, theyare always uproarisly funny but yet very considerate. thanks again.

    12. Hey there! I have to tell you, this is such a unique approach to a story. I’m still catching up on it, but I couldn’t resist when I saw this post to jump ahead. This story came HIGHLY recommended by the most credible source, so I couldn’t pass it up. The actual thought that Tina was raised by wolves…now that is funny! Thanks for the post!

    13. You make us wait, but it’s worth it. Dammit, Nanc beat me to the Bette Noire joke. I’m guessing as the non-birth mother Bette has a special affinity with Horton, and delights in the fact an elephant bird is hatched through his devotion. I’m a little surprised Red’s nose isn’t good enough to keep him up to date on human heat, even if he got to stick it in Bette’s ass just that one time.

    14. so funny…u r superb at this wolf stuff, i love Trouble and Bette. do u belong to a ‘save the wolves foundation?’look 4ward to the next chapter…brilliant imaginative story.
