    Ashes, ashes…Chapter 3

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Alice said.

“No.  I’m not kidding.  I don’t know what else to do,” Shane replied, pulling into a parking spot.

“This is pretty…drastic, though.  Don’t you think?  I mean, they didn’t exactly end things on great terms.”

“Do you have any other suggestions?  Because I’m up for anything at this point.”

Shane could hear Alice‘s sigh all the way across town.  “Yeah.  That’s what I thought you’d say,” she replied.

“Did you call first, or are you going to show up at her office and hope she’ll see you?”

“She’ll see me.  I’m not leaving without talking to her.  In her own way, I think she really cared about Tina,” Shane said, making her way across the wide expanse of parking lot to the front door of the building.

    “What if Bette finds out?”

“Yeah.  Right.  There’s a worry,” Shane muttered.

“She’s doing the best that she can, Shane.”

“Well her best ***** sucks right now.”

“She lost Little A too, you know,” Alice said quietly.

“And now she’s throwing Tina away.  That makes a lot of sense.”

“That’s Bette.  When things get too much, or out of control, she shuts down.  I still think if we can get her to stick around here for awhile, maybe see a shrink, that she–”

“I’m going.  I’ll call you later.”

    “Shane!”

    “What?”

“Are you sure this is a good idea?”

Shane paused for a moment outside the imposing glass door.  “I’m not sure of anything right now except that Tina is completely losing it.  And if this helps, I’m willing to try.”

    “Call me.  After.”

    “I will.”

Shane pulled open the door and walked up to the severe-looking receptionist.

“May I…help you?” the woman asked, staring long and hard at Shane’s ripped blue jeans and rumpled shirt.

    “I need to see Helena.”

    “Is Ms. Peabody expecting you?”

“No.  But could you tell her Shane McCutcheon is here.”  Shane wasn’t even sure if Helena would remember her last name.  They had spent so little time together that she wouldn’t have been surprised if her first name had failed to register.

    1. Oh my God FFC!!! I literally dropped my dinner down the front of my shirt when I read Helena’s name!!! Angelica dying…Bette moving to Seattle, now Shane calling Helena to help? Just what exactly do you want from us my dear, dear FFC?? Wonderful as always. Painful…shocking…but absolutely wonderful. Thanks!

    2. that’s just about killed me, helena to the rescue? i hope this plan won’t backfire…i mean i know helena will try to help but i don’t want to see her and tina getting close…why B&T are not talking…oh please don’t do this to our poor hearts

    3. hey blue what you doing up at such a late hour???ffc, i love you. you know that right? but omg helena???? gratefully when my son died i wasnt married and didnt have to worry about that aspeck of my grief, well except my 3 others. but i digress. i know this stuff happens when trama like this occurs in families. things get totally crazed. but god. im trusting you. this is sad and so utterly painful. they are both such wrecks. help

    4. You have a new story ffc! *Does little happy dance* Now with that out of the way, what an awful subject matter. Very poignant though, as always. Your subtlety is enthralling. Shane’s an amazing friend. Interesting that she went to Helena, but I’m all for it if she can help Tina in any way. Can’t wait for more of this. Thanks!

    5. Is Helena going to be decent this time or is her “help” going to be self serving? I keep waiting for something good to come out of Helena Peabody, a softness, if you will. I want her to find joy in govong, just for the sake of giving.
