Art of Love – Chpt 12
Previously
Peggy ignored Barbara’s hand, instead taking Helena’s in her own and leaving Barbara’s suspended awkwardly in mid-air. Peggy’s unexpected behavior left Helena staring with surprise at Barbara’s hovering hand.
“Mummy?” Helena said softly. “Aren’t you going to greet the Senator?”
“Of course, I am, Darling,” Peggy replied, smiling at Helena.
Peggy then looked Barbara dead in the eye.
“How’s tricks?”
Chapter 12
Shock and surprise washed simultaneously over both the Senator’s face and mine.
I quickly glanced at Mummy, who sported a smirk, and Bette, who subdued a snicker.
The Senator broke out in an uncomfortable, but conciliatory, laugh.
“I’ve heard you’re quite the character, Mrs. Peabody,” Barbara said, uttering the explanation she’d conjured up in her own mind for Mummy’s unexpected greeting.
“And, as concerns character, I’ve heard yours is quite colorful, Senator,” Mummy retorted.
Swiftly shooting Mummy a reproving eye, I took off for the kitchen clutching her hand.
“Excuse us, please,” I said, as I strode purposefully, my body slicing through the weighty tension that hung heavy in the air.
Long before the night had begun I’d determined that I was not going to leave Bette alone with the Senator, but immediate circumstances required that I expediently renounce that decision.
Since Barbara had behaved with perfect decency while we were alone together upstairs in the studio, I had no reason to suspect she should act inappropriately with Bette in our own living room, just steps away. At any rate, I wasn’t sure what was going on, but I was determined to find out promptly.
Having reached the kitchen, I turned quickly to Mummy, dropping her hand and running my own over my forehead and through my hair. I was brimming with consternation.
“Mummy, what’s going on?” I demanded.
“Whatever do you mean, Darling?” Mummy replied innocently.
“Don’t play coy with me, Mummy,” I whispered harshly. “Why did you receive the Senator with such a vulgar expression?”
“I thought it a rather fitting salutation for such a licentious, conniving barbarian,” Mummy answered resolutely.
I shook my head, trying to make some sense of what had transpired in the last ten minutes.
“ ‘Licentious, conniving barbarian’? Because Bette once slept with this woman?” I asked.

This is so hilarious. I love how Helena stomps her foot when she gets frustrated. So cute!
Lol at Peggy and love ‘the lamb for dinner”
Yeah go Peggy go, eat the lamb LOL
You’ve really managed to flesh out the character of the Senator with the words of the other players…well done zheese! Let’s see where the story takes us…
I’m sure ‘how’s tricks?’ was not some cryptic way of saying ‘I hope we have a simply magical evening together.'” *applauding* Just utterly delightful! PPS
Very Nice.
Peggy is the bomb!Score” Peggy – 1 Barbara – 0Next up, Round 2 (Dinner)
When did Helena insert the stick up her ass? How prim and proper she’s become. She may be too young to know that in it’s earlier incarnation “how’s tricks?” was slangy but not out right vulgar, acceptable for a teenager of the day to say in front of a parent. Really, though, Peggy and Bette should get that stick out of Helena’s ass so they can all have a good time shoving it up Barbara’s. They can they use it as a spit to slowly turn her as they roast her.
FYI: The earliest I’m aware of “how’s tricks?” being in common usage was the 40s.
sheep to the slaughter, yet again, PRICELESS. i can’t wait for them to eat…this is going to be hysterical!!LOVE IT!
Right now I don’t know what’s funnier; this chapter or funnyone’s comment about Helena having a stick up her ass. This just keeps getting better and better. In the words of bettefortina…..Round 2 – Dinner!!
That a girl Peggy.
Great just great, loved every word of it, also the ones were I needed my dictionary ;). Can’t wait to see how the evening will go on. “I don’t think that’s part of the menu you’re being served tonight, my dear,” Mummy addressed the Senator. “Bette and Helena partake only of each other.” hilarious, thanks.
lol…this was so funny. Oh my goodness the Senator need to leave as quickly as possible cause I am sure it’s just beginning. I think she wants a 3 way with Bette & Helena. Peggy is so funny that comment about “I don’t think that’s part of the menu you’re being served tonight…lol Keep posting love it!
