Anatomy of a Breakdown Chap 3
Chapter 3
The pleasantries the women share make the time lapse faster than they realize. They sit chatting about this and that. Dana looks at her watch.
“Shit guys I gotta get going.”
“Yeah me too I have a client in twenty.” Shane chimes in.
“I have a deadline in a few hours and still haven’t written.” The barrage of voices brings Bette gently out of her stare.
“Oh ok. Well I guess I’ll stick around and hang out with Kit for a bit.” Bette says to the group.
“Don’t you have to go back to work?” Alice asks in mild shock.
“Actually Al I left the CAC.” The group falls silent. Bette dropping a bomb leaving her friends in the aftermath.
“You what?” Tina sputters in a small voice.
“I resigned before I went to San Francisco.” Bette’s response is nonchalant at best. Her friends continue to stare in shock. “I am making changes in my life. I am determined to never make the same mistake twice.” She turns to face Tina as she emphasizes the last half of her statement.
“Wow Bette I just… after Provocations. Well your work was everything.” Alice speaks for the group.
“Work I realize will never be everything.” The sadness begins to rear its ugly head as she tries to maintain her composure. “It should have never been that way.” Bette’s honesty once again silences the group. Tina sits in her seat feeling a pang of resentment at hearing Bette’s words. “I guess the reality is that you never know how good you’ve got it until you’ve lost it.” Tina sits staring at Bette, ‘It’s now or never’ she thinks to herself.
“Bette we need to talk.” Tina says breaking the silence Bette has left in the wake of honest confessions. She looks at Tina making sure she’s heard her correctly.
“Really?” for added confirmation.
“Yes we need to talk.”
“Okay.” Taking this as their cue to exit Alice, Shane and Dana bid their friends a friendly farewell.
The life is seemingly sucked out of the room as the three girls find their way out leaving Bette and Tina in painful awkwardness.
“What is it you want to talk about?” Bette asks as casual as possible.

You can’t stop there! Bette needs to tell Tina why she went to San Fran. and how she went there to think of them when they were happy together and just keep going from where you left off, it was getting so good. PPS
Valenkat is so right. As for using the info, you are more thnwelcome to use any info I have, just happy that you could and wanted to use it. Happy to oblige. Hopefully Tina will find it in her heart to forgive Bette and trust her again. Love does erase a lot of faults and makes us blind to some things that we should see. But when it is the love of our life doing whatever, we tend to put it aside or ignore it altogether, until something happens that stuns us and then we can’t act except irrationally and that is ususally the wrong thing to do. Thanks for posting. PPS

Hello denEmat… I am probably alone in my personal views here but I feel it would be best for Bette to take a step back and absorb this information… leave the next move to Tina and kind of separate herself from the whole… I always saw Bette as an escapist… someone that suffers strongly from her abandonment issues… I loved how her short trip to San Fran allowed her some clarity but since she is no longer tied down to her job… and yes she has friends and a possible future with Tina I would love to see Bette cut out and discover who “she” is… “How could I have claimed to love you if I couldn’t even see you” what I want to know is… how can Bette even think of getting to know Tina if she doesn’t even know herself… I love the idea of Bette being let loose… maybe take another trip to Europe… Italy and regain her sense of self and a better appreciation for art and beauty that way she will allow Tina the time to either move on or make any moves to seeing where they might take their lives… you are doing an amazing job my friend… completely amazing… Sincerely, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels and ever loving Cuzzie to the ever Talented Eunichick)
Wow, the last statement was so true. Bette looked right past Tina for to long. Maybe now they can rebuild their friendship and go from there.
well at least they talked and the table it get turned over… i think tina sees a different bette… now bette has to prove herself… baby steps… thanks…PPS
very nice rewriting of the story! I can’t wait for the rest;-) It’s awesome.
Not old fashion romatic.Just show in small way that most people forget to do.. The talking is a must, Send her a letter telling her how beautiful she was today. Talk about the beautiful of the flower in the park. Discuss how Bette can to be a better person not only to Tina to to other. Bette can say I.m sorry til hell freezes over, Let her learn to walk the walk with Tina. and just show her love for her. thanks
You’ve done a wonderful job of writing a rhythm to B&T’s dialog… the only awkwardness is where it should be, in the response between the characters dealing with difficulties. Very good job! SK/C
