American Werewolves in London: Gothic Romances

Down a series of steps and through secret passageways, they found the large windowless room, once used by Feudal lords and visiting Kings.  Old military plans lay dusty and buried in books preserved by the home’s last owner.  Books on torture—the best and most ingenious ways to prolong the anguish of the conquered—were proof that the legacies of the mighty were born in blood, rather than heroism.

This room gave Bette the creeps.  It was layered and steeped in history.  At the end of it, a massive fireplace lay dormant. Tina refused to light it, for fear that the smoke would draw attention. And of course, a wooden stand held an old Bible.

“Look what I found.” Tina spoke from behind them, brushing past Bette on her way to the fireplace.  Helena and Bette trailed after her while she leapt six feet in the air and hovered above a series of wood carvings. “Rabbits…deer…and humans with wolf-like characteristics…” She gestured down to them, describing what she saw.

“What does it mean?” Helena looked around the room, wondering why such things were always found at sites like this—such contradictory images. On one hand, a Bible, on the other, a book of torture, and now this pagan imagery.

“I think they were afraid.” Bette said thoughtfully. “They didn’t like the things people threw at them, the things that peasants held onto…”

“Perhaps.” Tina smiled, running her fingers over the wooden images.

“Are you tired?” Helena asked her.  The brunette’s eyes were stinging, but more than fatigue, she felt hunger.

Tina shook her head and landed lightly on the ground.  She walked over to a bundle she had left by the doorway, on her way into the room. “Deer meat.” She said quietly, handing out the pieces to Bette, and the collected blood to Helena.

“Don’t want it.” The Brit whispered. “I’d rather eat people…they’re not quite so innocent.”

“Which people?” Bette snapped.  Her girlfriend sighed beside her and reached out to touch her arm in a conciliatory way.

While Tina and Helena ate quickly, Bette barred the door to the room.  They made a small fire and burned bloody rags in it before snuffing it out.

    1. Bette’s transformation into a Jaguar or Puma-like creature is kind of sexy; the eyes that “were death itself” not so much. I thoroughly enjoyed Tina’s musings on the void and nothingness, as well as (it goes without saying) Bette and Helena getting busy.

    2. Hey, have been silent for awhile but have been really enjoying this, so Bette’s a cross between American werewolf and Catpeople..yey Shane/Carm!..hmmm could Al/Dana be hunters?

    3. Oh goody, you’re back with the spooky crazy shit! Maybe I’m dense, but what’s the contradiction between a Bible and a book of torture? Haven’t they been using the Bible as an instrument of torture for millenia? And I would have thought that Bette in her hybrid werewolf/cat/vampire state would have been beyond getting creeped out by anything. Oh well. Just what are Shane and Carmen up to with their silver spike cottage industry? Now please don’t let it be so long between drinks, eh?

    4. See, I think the silver stakes are for upscale gardens, you know, to hold up the upscale beans and tomatoes and what have you. I refuse to think of other more sinister use. I am confused now, I LIKED Willow and Tara and Kennedy…but now they are bad, cos Bette and Helena rock and nobody better hurt them! Can’t you just lose Tina, speaking of torture, lol, for a little while, and have some more lovin with B and H? Are Shane and Carmen human?
