A Space Between: Bette, Tina and their Primordial Buddha, Chapter Three

Several hours later, Bette’s concentration was broken by the loud coughing of another passenger somewhere to the right and front of the plane.  She scowled at the sound, which would usually be muffled when she had her preferred window seat.  Bette glanced at Tina to see if she had been disturbed.  Tina moved slightly but quickly settled back into her deep slumber.

Bette was relieved that Tina stayed asleep, though she envied the sleeping pill Tina could take when they took long flights.  Bette could not.  The surrender to the pill’s effectiveness frightened her.

As she reached into her bag, Bette now smiled at the memory of their playfulness as they discussed the window seat.  She touched a file folder and wondered at its contents.  Inside she found a typed draft of a letter, clearly a collaboration of James and Tina, addressed to the CAC board.  It addressed Bette’s concerns about the third destination on Tina’s itinerary.

Within days of the press release announcing her appointment as the new director of the CAC, the cultural ministry of Nepal had invited her to join a group of Americans prominent in the arts for a visit to their country.  It was the first evidence of the different status that accompanied Bette’s career change, but she had respectfully declined, certain that the closing of her gallery would be more time consuming than turned out to be the case.  She was also concerned about the seemliness of taking a free trip and did not want to do something questionable before she even had officially started as director.

She shook her head, amused at James’ and Tina’s tactics.  Tina, brazenly, had called the cultural ministry and asked if two could be added to the group. At first they balked, huffing and puffing that Ms. Porter’s spot had been filled by a prominent college professor who taught Asian art at a prestigious college.  However, miraculously, additional room was found when Tina explained that she was head of development at Alphaville Studios and would be accompanying Ms. Porter.

The letter to the CAC board was respectful (that was James) but not obsequious (that was Tina).  It explained the invitation and that the costs of the trip would be paid by Bette and Tina.  It went on to say that they would donate the cash equivalent of any meal or event to a Nepalese charity, the CAC or some charity chosen by the CAC board.  The idea for the last part was pure Tina.

    1. I just caught this installment. It’s nice. I’ll have to check out the rest. Plus I give Tina props for planning; they probably would have had trouble getting Bette’s hair products in Beijing.

    2. I truly enjoyed seeing this special moment in time. I hope you change history as you write and bring the love and priority to one another with them into later days. PHENOMENAL chapter!

    3. finally, continuation of this story…i agree with bailey about some sadness knowing what had become of tibette later but i could see how perfect they were together, no matter what

    4. Beautifully written, but with an undertone of sadness knowing what we know will become of this couple. Tina’s wishful thinking that Bette will have more free time now that she works for the CAC. Makes you want to reach back in time and rewrite some of their history…which I hope you do :)

    5. Hey your muse isn’t all that’s been MIA! Check the mailbox dude! I like this story, even with the Tina factor, because it shows her thinking about Bette and caring about her feelings, and also not depending on Bette for everything. I wonder what Bette wrote on the Alphaville thing? It’s kind of cool that they each can use their professional skills to help each other like that.

    6. Well I’ll Be!! You’ve posted again! I think you’re Muse is in perfectly working order! This was awesome update and I can’t wait to see what Bette contributed to Tina’s business plans!
