    “I miss her already.” – Bette Porter.

    It’s early, not even 7am, but I’m already at the gallery working hard preparing for a new exhibition. Alice went back to New York yesterday so I’m completely free from distractions which means that I should get some real progress made before Shane comes home at the end of the week.

    I look down the list of potential contractors and smile ruefully to myself. If only I’d known then what I know now. Pick the people that are going to work in your gallery carefully because who knows what kind of damage they can do. As I’m thinking this my cell phone rings, breaking the blissful silence. I look at the caller ID and recognise it as the hospital, immediately my heart starts beating faster, as I think that worst.

    “Hello.” I say, trying to remain calm.

    “Is that Bette Porter?” asks a male voice from the other end of the line.

    “Yes, who’s this?”

    “Ms Porter, it’s Dr Cook from the hospital. I’m calling because I’m afraid that I have some bad news….”

    “What kind of bad news?” I ask, interrupting.

    “Overnight there were some complications with Ms McCutcheon’s condition. As you know she had surgery to control some internal bleeding. As a result of this surgery a blood clot formed, we believe that it originated in her leg, and it moved to her lungs. Because of this blood was prevented from travelling to her lungs, where it gains oxygen. We used all of our capabilities to dislodge the clot but we were too late, and unfortunately we were not able to save her. I’m sorry.”

    I’m not even sure I hear the last part of what the doctor has just said as I am currently looking at the phone in my hand, and not holding it to my ear at all. I can hear a voice still coming out of the end of the phone but all I can think about is how that can’t be right. There can no way that Shane wouldn’t be here with me. I’m going to pick her up from the hospital on Friday and then take care of her until she’s ready to move back home. Again I can hear the voice and this time I move the phone to my ear so that I can listen to anything else that he might have to say.

    2. OMG! No, no, no, no! You can`t let Shane die… my god, I read the docter part about 20 times and then still couldn`t believe that this was happening! It was an awesome chapter though, really liked it … and it was definitely the first story there were tears formed in my eyes ;_; Please update soon!

    9. WOW! I certainly was bushwhacked by that development. I don’t want B & T to reunite b/c Tina feels sorry for Bette but b/c she realizes how much she still loves her.

    10. Well that’s life, ever-changing and unpredictable. You’ve captured it well, let them not waist any more precious time, resolution is overdue for them and death definitely gives a kick in the pant.

    11. You lulled me into forgeting the foreshadowing of Shane’s death earlier in the story. This was a really sad chapter. I hate to say it as a die hard Tibetter, but it really puts things into perspective (still want them together tho’ :)). Great, sad, gut-wrenching chapter.

    13. Totally unexpected but at the same time it should have been expected. The previous chapter was almost a precursor to this utterly devastating chapter. Damn, Shane’s dead? The entire build up has made this all the more heartbreaking. Alice will be ripped to pieces first Dana and now Shane. You have truly taken on a monumental task with this story; so many layers and feelings. Wonderful stuff city….wonderful

    15. omfg, WTF, what a bummer, is this for real? is this some sick joke? all my initial reactions, not Shane, there is no Bette story without Shane…..omg, omfg….I dunno about this s/l…..it’s too much for me, like it’s real not just a story cuz I love Shane and Bette and Shane’s relationship more than I love Bette and Tina’s even tho I want them 2gether; I just always loved me some Shane and Bette, they were just always there for each other; omfg, you’ve put me in a spin!!!!!!

    21. I think we were all blindsided by this turn of events. So sad if this is the pivotal point in bringing about B&T’s long awaited talk. Regrets, regrets and more regrets!! Will something good come out of this? I guess I’ll just have to wait. Please post again soon!!!

    23. Talk about having the wind knocked out of you. Bette and Shane helped each other through probably the toughest time in the lives. They became the inseperable duo of heart ache. Now part of the duo is gone. Shane would have given anything for Bette and Tina to sit down and talk. She knew that both of them still loved the other. What nobody knew was that Shane would give the ultimate sacrifice for them to have that one more chance of getting their love back. It is up to them now.

    24. Citygirl! You made me cry and that is so not cool. Oh my god this was touching! I read this whole story with my mouth open like ‘did i just read what I thought I read’ your writing brings out so many emotions…you’re good. Can’t wait for Tina & Alice’s reactions.

    29. I definitely didn’t consider Shane’s death when I read the summary. Okay show of hands. How many people thought the summary was in reference to missing Tina? Or heck even Alice. *raises hand*

    30. CG, What a stormer that was! Talk about pulling the rug from your readers. I am completely gutted that Shane died. Can’t say you didn’t keep it real though. It was brilliant to see Kit be there for Bette and help each other begin the grieving process. That was an explosive way to bring Bette and Tina back in the same city. It will give them reason to evaluate their lives and realize what is important and wh they most desire. This is going to be so sad. Thank you for this tumultuous tale. Your Loyal Fan.
