Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 3: Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid)

The ceiling suddenly became a fascinating work of art; her ears pricked up like an excited dog, following her mother’s expensive shoes as they clicked along the kitchen tile. Her stomach gurgled, in response to the inevitable unpleasant conversation soon to arise or the half-pound of cookies and six-pack of soda she had ingested. Either way, she felt sick.

“Honey! Honey? Why are you sitting in the dark? And there better be a coaster underneath that beverage, you know how I feel about that table.”

Paula stood with her back to the light, a faint glow illuminating her backside and above her head. With the fur shawl wrapped around her shoulders, she could almost pass for an angel. Spencer had to stifle a laugh at the thought of her mother and an angel having any thing in common whatsoever. An angel of annoyance, dye jobs, bad cooking, and hot air, maybe, but otherwise the concept was preposterous.

Her father’s tuxedo bowtie was crooked and it looked weird. Spencer stared at it intently, saddened by the fact that she didn’t care. Had no desire to bring it to his attention, to help him avoid embarrassment or discomfort. She wanted the flaw to show, have other’s see it and whisper, acknowledge its presence. The perfect Carlin’s crooked bowtie. Like a fat pile of shit in the middle of their neatly trimmed front lawn.

“Hey, buck-aroo, how was your night?”

Great, she thought, until you came home.

“That’s the fourth night this week, you’ve watched that movie.”

The couple stood side-by-side, both feet balanced perfectly on the tile right before the carpet.

Spencer knew a response was needed to avoid unnecessary conversation, so she allowed her vocal cords to do their job.

“Yah. I just really like it.”

She pushed herself into a sitting position, turning awkwardly to the left so she could continue this thoroughly engaging exchange of words.

“Our baby is going to be a famous actress, isn’t she, Arthur?”

Paula’s heels clicked a few more times before the sound was muffled by carpet. She took a seat next to Spencer, clicking her tongue and shaking her head side to side at the mass of half-eaten crap that littered her precious coffee table.
