Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 3: Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid)

    Here’s Lookin’ at You, Kid

Quick snippets of shadow reflected off the four white walls of the living room. Raindrops quietly pelted the glass at the far side of the room. A half-eaten package of Chewy Chips Ahoy lay in a torn heap on the coffee table, mingling with cookie crumbs and empty soda cans. Her hand flailed blindly across the carpet below her, seeking the remote. This was her favorite part and she didn’t want to miss a word, not even a breath. She silently cursed the sound bars that emerged across the bottom of the screen, almost wishing she had just left it alone.

“Love is rotten when it happens like this – the hard way. But we want each other, this is the fire we have to walk through, because this is forever, Mae.”

    “Forever?”

“Or until he sticks a knife in me, or you walk out.”

    “How could I walk out?”

“And do the next thing, get away from here. If you have a dream, live it. If you have a hope, chase it.”

She mouthed the words of both characters, her silent lines full of emotion. She understood both Mae and Ellis, both sides of the coin. Life was rough in a noir flick. The suckers always got beat and the even the strong couldn’t survive. You could blame it on money, the cops, a bum rap…but it was always because of a dame. A no-good, back stabbing, double crossing dame. The city was littered with ‘em.

Outside, she heard a faint rumbling and sighed heavily, acknowledging her parents arrival. She never had much time to herself. It was nice having her brother’s away at college, and although her parents were never around much, she found herself more and more annoyed at the sounds of their voices. It was as if only lately, she began to notice that irritating way her father pronounced “be-cawse.” Or the odd way her mother’s head tilted when she was lying. It was such a dead giveaway. As if the right side of her brain swelled when she was full of shit, causing it to fall towards her shoulder.

A thin jagged triangle of light stabbed into the room, spilling across the carpet and over her legs on the couch, illuminating the pile of half eaten substances and empty cans, the staple diet of an eighteen yr old girl.
