    Nothing tastes as sweet as what I can’t have…

    Children of various sizes ran around yelling, fighting, and crying. His mind wondered as his eyes unconsciously searched. Aiden sighed softly, staring at a small brown haired little boy playing alone in a turtle shaped sandbox. His large, ruffled curls fell into his eyes as he bent over a small mound of dirt. Ashley followed his gaze, her chest tightening as she realized what he was looking at. “We used to come here all the time…me and Spence.”

    Aiden watches as the little boy’s mother gives him a large red balloon. Bending over him, she kisses his forehead before tying it securely to his wrist. His breath catches when the small boy smiles, even from a distance the grin lights up his entire face. Dancing around happily, the little boy grins, excitedly moving his arm up and down. “We don’t come here anymore.” Aiden’s eyes strayed, briefly glancing down at their intertwined hands before settling on Ashley’s face. “Aide…she can’t get pregnant…” Her pain is tangible, pressing into his chest. Looking away, his eyes fall back to the small boy. Aiden wants to tell him to stop, to leave the knot alone, but he’s picking at it, biting. “I’ve been taking these treatments…I-I love you Aiden.”

    All of the clues connect. Suddenly he knows why he is here in this park, staring at a child that looks like the perfect mix of him and her. Ashley’s hands rest in her own lap now, twitching nervously. It happens almost in slow motion, Aiden silently watches the thin white string fall away, unraveling like his love for the woman sitting beside him. The little boy’s face turns upwards, following the balloon as it climbs higher then before. His small hands reach out grasping, desperately trying to get it back. Clapping together above his head they close on nothing. Aiden stares at the red, floating bubble as it crosses the sun. He stands, looking down at Ashley, her body hidden by bright, white splotches and tears. “Fuck you.”

    “It feels so good to be out here.” Ashley stared at her wife’s closed eyes as she lifted her face towards the sun. She actually glows. Reveling in the soft feel of silk against her fingers, Ashley gently pushed a few golden strands behind Spencer’s ear, “I can’t tell you how good it feels to have you here, baby.” Ashley hugged her closer, pressing her lips against sun warmed skin, whispering. “Honey, I need to talk to you.” Her stomach flipped nervously as her wife’s body tensed in her arms. “Please.” Spencer forced herself to turn over in the hammock, facing her wife. They stared at each other, arms intertwined, mouths only inches apart. “I hate the way you look at me now.” Using her fingertips, Spencer gently pushed against her wife’s furrowed brow, smoothing the lines, “I hate what this has done to you…it’s all my fault.” Gasping, Ashley pulled her wife’s shaking body into her arms, “Do you know how much I love you? Baby, you’re everything to me. I can’t…I can’t even think about you not being in my life.”

    23. i think this story is a little above my reading level…lol. i know it jumps back and forth…but im confused as tro when it does and what exactly is going on with spencer in labor…or not? oh man…im lost. but from what i do understand…i like it! lol.
