South of Forks – (Chapter: 3: I Hate Dogs… So Which One Do You Want? )
The SUV careened toward me! I couldn’t believe it, my life was already over; before it even started! All I saw was a flash of blonde before me. The next thing I knew, Spencer Carlin was kneeling in front of me. She looked directly into my eyes, like she was trying to ee into my soul. Without peeling her gaze away from me, she deftly put her arm straight out towards the out-of-control SUV. The SUV rammed into her hand with no sign of stopping. All I heard was a crash, glass shattering, and the crunch of fiberglass and metal as the whole side of the montrous vehicle dented in where Spencer’s hand had been. A little slower than the blonde got there, she was gone. She just walked away into the woods surrounding the school.
Everyone crowded me and insisted that I go to the ER. “Ohmigod, Ashley!” I heard from the crowd.
“Ashley! Are you okay?” My dad yelled as he pushed open the double doors.
“I’m fine, Dad. Really, I am. Don’t make such a fuss over this.”
“He nearly killed you, Ash!” My father insisted, as he pointrd to Tyler, the boy who was driving the SUV. He looked worse off than me, mind you.
“But he didn’t. I’m all good. Spencer Carlin saved me!”
“My daughter, Spencer Carlin?” Dr. Carlin walked in at that moment. The man was good looking with salt-n-peppered dark hair, but he had the same bright blue orbs that his adoptive children have. At first, I had to look multiple time to see if I was just imagining things.
“Yeah, she pushed me out of the way or pushed the truck away. I don’t know how or what she did exactly but I owe her my life!”
“Glad to hear that my girl could lend a hand, Ashley.”
“Ashley, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to! I skidded and I couldn-” tyler tried to apologize, but my dad cut him off.
“Oh, you’re gunna be sorry. You’ll never drive in this town again.”
“Dad, be easy on him. He didn’t mean to, and it wasn’t his fault that his car slid. If anything, blame the constant rain.” I tried to reason with him, but there was no use.
My dad received a phone call and I could hear the panic on the other end even though I was sitting three feet from my old man.
“Yes, I’ll be right there. Give me ten minutes.” Told you he was the best.
“Hey, sweetheart, I gotta go. There was a body found right outside of roseland. I’m gunna get Billy to come pick you up, okay? Don’t go anywhere until he gets here.”
“Okay, dad.” Where else would I go?
He left the room and as the doors opened, I saw blonde, flowing hair. I got up from the examination bed and headed out the same doors the sherrif just used.
Spencer was in the hall with some of her siblings, arguing over something. I only heard bits and pieces of the debate.
“-would tou rather I let her die?!”
“You coulda covered a little! You put us all at risk by saving one girl!” Madison was clearly pissed off. But so was I. Spencer did the right thing, and I’m not just saying that because I was the one that was almost mince-meat!
They all looked at me at once. Chelsea, madison, and Glen left Spencer standing there. She came over to me and cut me off before I could say anything. “I saved your life, but you don’t need to thank me. Its really not a big deal.”
“Not a big deal?! You stopped that huge SUV with one bare hand! How is that not a big deaal?!”
“Because it’s not. Just lower your voice and I didn’t stop it. I only got you out of the way. You just hit your head, you’re clumsy that way.”
“Are you gunna keep insulting me after you saved my life?!”
“I’m not insulting you. I can’t help telling the truth.” She half smiled. Her smile turned into a scowl with this faraway look in her eyes. “I gotta go. I hate dogs.” And she was gone.
“Hey, Ashley.” I heard from behind me. I knew that voice, but its been so long since I’ve heard it.
“Aiden?!” I didn’t even recognize him. He used to be thin, but now, he was ripped! He had muscles that were barely contained in his cut-off t-shirt. We hugged and when he lowered me back to my feet, we started light conversation. “It’s been so long since I’ve seen you! Last time I saw you, you were about thos high and massively scrawny. But look at you now. You benn workin’ out? Training for a triathalon or something?!”
“Nah, none of that. It’s just how our people are. How are you doing with the pale-faces?”
“Fitting in great! I almost got hit by an SUV today, that’s always exciting.” We laughed and talked some more. I realized we were outside now. I saw a beat-up old Ford Mustang convertible and an even more beat-up old truck in the driveway of the hospital.
“So which one do you want?” Aiden asked me.
“Huh?”
“The truck or the car?”
“Um the car, I guess? What’s this all about, Aiden?”
“Your dad bought that car off of us and I was just making sure you wanted it before I helped you fix it up.”
“Wait, that’s my car?”
“Yup. Aand when I’m done with it, it will look better than a new one.” Aiden clearly loved cars and working on them.
“That is so great, Aiden. Thank you!” I jumped up on him, hugging him.
“Well, hop in and we’ll go to the beach with a few friends of mine.”
We got in the Mustang and I started it up. Aiden’s dad drove off in the truck as we headed to the beach.
