South of Forks – (Chapter: 2: The Carlins)
The bell rang and signaled me that it was time for math. This was not going to be my favorite class, by any means. I found my way to the right hallway and knew I was in the right place when I saw mike waving to me like a crazy-person.
“Hey, Ash. How was art with Chelsea Carlin?”
“She laughs… A lot.”
“Yeah, they all have weird quirks like that. They are all really smart though; top of the class, I believe. The smartest is Clay, though. You’ll get to see him in this class. Then you’ll see them all together at lunch.”
We walked into the room and I immediately saw who I assumed was Clay Carlin. He was a dark-skinned boy with his hair cut really short. All of the Carlins that I’ve seen so far have this thing about them. They just draw peoples attention. We sat down seeing as though the teacher sat me next to Mike, trying to do me a favor, I guess. I wished she wouldn’t do me favors. The class went on without any excitement. The bell rang; time for lunch. All the Carlins in one room: this ought to be interesting.
They were all sitting at one table in the corner of the cafeteria. None of them had trays or any food at all. Ithought, then, that they might be vegetarian, or maybe their doctor-dad had them on a special diet. I look back now I have to enjoy the irony of it all.
They all had a unique style. It looked like they were wearing more old fashioned clothes but with special alterations to make their outfits modern and contemporary. It was weird, then, that for being adopted siblings, they all had the same bright blue (almost neon, even) eyes. I had to get to know this family!
The rest of the day was boring to say the least, until of course, seventh block rolled around. I had PE with Mike of course, as well as, Glen and Madison Carlin. Glen seems okay, but Madison just seems like she’s always pissed off. The only time she even smiles is when Glen is near her. I watched the two of them from the other side of the gym, since Glen seems stronger than everyone in the whole class.
I walked out of the front of the school with Mike trailing behind me. I glanced over and saw the whole Carlin family (minus Dr. Carlin and Mrs. Carlin) huddled on and around their bright red Hummer2. Spencer was watching me and I could still feel her eyes when I turned away from her to the other side of the parking lot. I dropped my sketch-pad when I was trying to get it out of my bag, then tripped while trying to pick it up. I was on my hands and knees retrieving my pad and dignity when I heard screeching of tires. I looked up just in time to see a big, blue SUV coming straight for me! I closed my euyes and braced myself for impact; that’s all I could do. There’s no way I’d survive that…
