Somebody to Love – (Chapter: (1))
"okay then" I said taking it back then I sat in the studio and pulled out my phone to call Tommy
"yo what’s up?" he asked me answering the phone
"we’re changing one of Kesha’s tour dates…" I told him "…we’re not putting her on for Christmas"
"okay good" he told me "what about ZOX, did you listen to them?" he asked me
"yeah I did, and I don’t see record sales, they’re not catchy enough." I told him hanging up the phone
"They weren’t kidding about you…" Kesha said
"Who and what weren’t they kidding about?" I asked her
"you’ve been producing for two and a half months and you’ve forgotten what it’s all about" she said
"what are you talking about?" I asked
"oh my god." she said simply getting frustrated "You don’t see music for what it really is…no wonder they kept telling me to give you good beats because that’s all you look for. Here I was thinking you listened to what I had to say."
"I’ve listened…" I told her
"yeah, to Tik Tok…a song about drinking and partying when I have other great ones." she said pleading her case to me "It’s nice to know you’ll cut me loose from a record deal if I don’t give you a good beat." she said being sarcastic and I actually started to realize she was right. Music used to be my passion and I couldn’t stop writing or playing the piano or acoustic guitar "you used to write the best lyrics of all…"
"that’s not what sells…you want to be successful don’t you? the public doesn’t want something that isn’t catchy." I told her
"you underestimate the public." she told me "I was the one who listened to the words and bought songs not for the beat but for what the artist had to say." she added "here…" she said going to the sterio system and she put on Somebody to Love by Queen
"how did you know this used to be my favorite song?’ I asked her smiling hearing Freddy Mercury’s voice
"used to be? this still is your favorite song…and you know it’s not because of the beat, it’s because of what he has to say…you can’t lie and say you don’t still take this song to heart" she said and she was right, I had overlooked everything I stood for. Music was so much more than just a catchy beat. Granted, that’s what pulled you in, but it’s the words that people sing and quote all the time. Every band deserved and chance, and it was more than the popular people that could have been on iTunes and all the radio stations.
"you’re right…" I told her smiling while starting to listen to the song "…you know, I used to be able to pull a song right out of my ass when you handed me an acoustic guitar" I said "now what do I do? I sit here and remix songs to make them sound better."
"it’s still the song Ash…the same words, just a different beat and that doesn’t change a songs meaning." she told me trying not to sing along
we sat there and talked for what seemed like no time at all, then I stopped mid conversation "shit! what time is it?" I asked her and she looked at her watch
"about one in the morning" she told me
"damnit" I said grabbing my jacket and throwing it on with my hat and scarf then I grabbed my purse and phone
"in a hury for something this late?" she asked me
"yeah, my girlfriend…I told her I’d be home like an hour ago" I told her
"did she call you?" she asked
"no…she’s probably too pissed off" I explained quickly
"so you’re gay?" she said
"tabloids don’t lie about some things…" I told her leaving not knowing she was sitting there smiling and I took the whole way home going through all my old music on my iPod and I was listening to the bands I had turned down for record deals knowing that they did have potential, and I had Kesha to thank for that. Arizona may be my one love, but it’s nice to find that person who shares the same love for music as you do.
