Nowheresville – (Chapter: In A Far Country: Chapter 10)
Ashley’s POV
I don’t know how long it’s been since I got here. Every day I sit im my corner. Every day I just drink water and eat the less gray food. Every day I wait for her. Every night I dream about her. Every day I count the pads on the walls and the stitches in the bed sheets. Every day I rock back and forth on my haunches like a wolf. Every day I get electrocuted and keep the energy stored away. Every day I get a little bit crazier. Every day I try to fight the cabin fever. Every day that stupid voice says
"The doctor will see you now."
And they drag me down the all too familiar halls to the all too familiar white bucket chair.
"Hello I am Doctor Z. I am going to show you some pictures and I want you to tell me what you see." he says in a voice like the narrator of "Tellytubbies".
"Whatever, I don’t care any more." I mumble disinterested. He produces some giant pre-schoolish flash cards.
He holds the first one up to me, it’s a cartoon dog. I think of my dogs but fight the urge to show emotion. I say "dog". He holds up a card with a leaf on it; I say "leaf". This continues on in a boring methodical way until he gets to the last card. It’s blue, the same color as Spencer’s eyes. "Spencer" I whisper. He takes out the evil button and pushes it hard. I feel the energy coursing through me heating me up a bit and I store it away. He seems to think I am unphased. I’m not. Inside I feel my numbness fade and the hole returns to my heart as well as the coldness to my soul. I shudder wildly and fall from my chair. I hear a familiar swoosh as two more white coats come in and pick me up. My world goes black in an instant. The darkness doesn’t stay for long because soon I find myself back in my corner but without the straight-jacket. I’m in an oversized white T-shirt and some thin white sweat pants. I examine my arms like precious jewls. I haven’t seen them in so long. I look at my fingers and my nails are extremely long for me. I slowly start to move my arms again. Practicing with my fingers and poking my bicepts. I get tired after a long while and lay down to another restless sleep.
A week passes and they think I’ve made improvement so they take me to another white room. Inside there is a set of giant white dominoes without the spots. Dominoes… I remember those. What are they for again? Oh right to make a chain of them fall down. Every action has an equal but opposite reaction! That’s when IT hit me! An idea! I hadn’t had an idea since they put me in the truck. If I can store up enough energy, I’ll be able to short this place out! I’ll blow the fuse! If my calculations are correct, It will only take about 3 more months of electrocution, but not every day. I will have to do this slowly every other day. Getting just a little bit more each time. Slowly building up my reserves. Then I can tap into this place find out where the money is, where I am and how I can get to Spencer. I go over to the dominoes and set them up like two halves of a broken heart. I pushed one down and they all fell revealing my creation to the white coat watching me from a corner. She pulled out my escape button and pressed it hard. I took in half of the energy and sent the rest where I thought the door was. It left a scorch mark. Finnaly something not white! As I rub the black onto my fingers a smile spreads onto my lips. Fueled by hope I reset my dominoes into a circle. As the other ‘doctors’ come in to pick up the woman I shocked I turn around and look at them innocently.
"Is she ok?" I ask sweetly, looking at the woman with false concern. "I hope she’s not hurt. She must of pushed the button by accident and shocked herself." I say turning once again to my dominoes as a new white coat takes the place of the fallen one. I have adapted to my environmental changes and new restrictions; I surely will not die.
