Nowheresville – (Chapter: In A Far Country: Chapter 10)
Jack London: In A Far Country
"When a man journeys into a far country, he must be prepared toforget many of the things he has learned, and to aquire such customs as are inherent to the new land; he must abandon the old ideals and old gods, and oftentimes he must reverse the very codes by which his conduct has hitherto been shaped. To those who have the protean faculty of adaptability, the novelty of such change may even be a source of pleasure; but to those who are hardened to the ruts in which they have been created, the pressure of the altered environment is unbearable, and they chafe in body and spirit under the new restrictions which they do not understand. This chafing is bound to act and react, producing diverse evils and leading to various misfortunes. It were better for the man who cannot fit himself into the new groove to return to his own country; if he delay too long he will surely die."
Spencer POV
It’s been three months since they stole her from me. Three months! Every night I scry for her, every night I send out my thoughts for her, every night I light a candle for her. Every night I cry for her. Every night I miss her. I have searched the whole state. I have started to search the rest of the East Coast but to no avail. I read much more than I ever have in attempt to expand my mind like she would have wanted me to. I wear black every day now in mourn for her. I stay up in my room save for dinner because I don’t want my parents to get in my business, not that I think the would notice. I keep my shades up because winter is dark. Glen hasn’t spoken to me since I flung him down the stairs. I practice controling my powers at the creek. Water seems to be a base for me. Tides and rain, clouds and currents; all are my friends now. I like the gray cold weather. It matches my eyes, they’ve been gray since that dreadful Sunday in August. Aiden avoids my glance and the drones that followed me around school are long gone. It’s recess and I’m sitting where I first saw her sitting watching me that first day of school.
