North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: A Message From the Heavens…)

“I knew that you were still in love with me. I wanted you to follow your heart for once and stop being so practical all the time!”

“What about you? Our last year of college, you barely spoke to me and after graduation I saw you, what? Twice? You wanted to be some hotshot ad exec and you are. Congratulations, but in those years when you were too busy to me, my life went on. I couldn’t sit around and wait for you…not again.”

Ashley knew that Spencer was right. Perhaps the most recent burden of blame was mostly Spencer’s but she knew that she had done her fair share of screwing up along the way.

“Come in. I have a fire going in the fireplace. We can talk…really talk.”

    “Definitely…but, Ash?”

    “Yeah?”

    “It’s like, ninety degrees outside.”

“I turned the thermostat down to thirty-five. Trust me, you’ll appreciate the fire.”

After Spencer sent Lindsay a text message telling her she could leave, she and Ashley talked for hours. Ashley confessed that the years in which she hadn’t talked to Spencer had been the worst years of her life. She was lonely, lacking a best friend she tried to find warmth in the blankets of girls that she went home with for the night. But nothing had been able to fill the Spencer-shaped hole that had been in her heart. Spencer explained why she felt she needed Rachel, why she so often ran away from Ashley, why she had felt she could no longer take a risk with her heart.

“I think we can make this work, Spence. I really do.”

“I think so too…but I think we should take it slow…start all over, or else we’ll keep making the same mistakes and eventually it’ll tear us apart for good.”

“We can go on dates, have awkward conversations where we try to learn about each other all over again…sounds great,” Ashley said with a smile, more happy in this moment than she had been in years.

“I’d really like that,” Spencer replied, nodding and grabbing Ashley’s hand.

“Whoa…whoa…I don’t hold hands until the second date. I’m sorry.”
