North of Somewhere: All Grown Up – (Chapter: A Message From the Heavens…)

Spencer stood outside of Ashley’s door, growing more and more nervous every second. After a few moments, she could hear the sound of footsteps on the other side of the barrier. Spencer inhaled as it swung open and then there was Ashley, looking tired and beautiful and disappointed to see her.

“What do you want, Spencer?” she asked with a sigh.

“Ten years ago you sat in my living room and you told me that you wanted me, but that you didn’t want to hurt me, remember?”

“Yeah…so?” Ashley replied, impatient with the situation.

“Well, that’s how I feel now. I want you. I’ve wanted you for years. I wanted you that night two weeks ago…I want you now. Rachel and I are over…we broke up. The wedding’s off. You and I can finally be together.”

    “She came here, you know…”

    “What? Why? When?”

“I’m assuming right after you left…a couple hours ago.”

“Ok…why?” Spencer said, her heart beating rapidly against her chest.

“She told me that she had lied…that there had never been an open relationship. She didn’t stay long.”

    “Oh.”

    “Yeah.”

Awkward silence filled in the space where Spencer should’ve begged Ashley to take her inside and let her spend hours making up for the pain she had caused her. Instead, she looked at her feet, thinking of the right words to say.

“Is that it, Spence? You came here because she broke up with you and now I can be your consolation prize? I don’t think so.”

“Can I please come inside? Trust me, I’m well aware that I have a lot of apologizing to do.”

“No, whatever you have to say you can say right here.”

“Ok…fine. I guess I deserve that. Listen, I know that I’ve screwed up a lot lately.”

    “Obviously.”

“Ashley, how was I supposed to know ten years ago that you were the one? I was sixteen! The next time I was barely twenty and you expect me to have this all figured out? And then there’s this time…you tell me how you feel knowing that I have a fiancée? What did you want me to do? Drop my entire life and give it another chance with my ex-girlfriend from high school?”
