North of Somewhere (A Story) – (Chapter: Love Is Boring)

Ashley was horrified. It was her first day volunteering with Spencer at Maple Hill Elementary School and already she was ready to throw in the towel. She stood in front of fourteen very loud, very hyper, very unimpressed seven and eight year-olds and she wasn’t anywhere close to being ready to teach them the first thing about music.

“Uh, hey, you guys!” Ashley attempted to yell above the noise of the classroom, “Can you quiet down…please?”

For a moment everyone grew quiet and turned to look at Ashley’s worried face. It was as if they hadn’t noticed her presence and suddenly they were ready to listen to what she had to say…what she was there to teach them. Well, that was what Ashley was hoping anyway, but in a few seconds they lost interest and went back to their original conversations.

“Jeez…” Ashley mumbled to herself. She had no idea what she was going to do.

“How’s it going in here?” came a voice from the doorway. Ashley turned around and was suddenly face to face with her smiling, blonde girlfriend.

“Are you serious? Look at them,” Ashley replied, gesturing towards the chaotic conditions of the classroom.

    “Hmmm….watch this.”

With that, Spencer walked over to the middle of the room, loudly clapping her hands until all of the kids faced her silently.

“Miss Davies is here to give you guys a little music lesson. If you’re good, then at the end of the thirty minutes, everyone gets a piece of candy. Can you guys be good for Miss Davies?” Spencer asked enthusiastically.

“Yes!” the class screamed in unison.

Spencer walked back over to Ashley, “See? It’s easy. I’m sure you’ve got it from here.”

Ashley responded with a nervous grin and slowly walked towards the center of the room.

“And Ashley?” Spencer whispered from the doorway.

    “Yeah, Spence?”

“You’ve got the candy I asked you to pick up, right?”

Ashley held up a grocery bag, the contents small and colorful.

“Perfect,” Spencer said as she made her way into the hallway.

Ashley watched her girlfriend in appreciation as she walked away before continuing, “Uh, yeah. So what she said…I mean, Miss Carlin….ha. Miss Carlin, that’s hysterical.”

Ashley laughed at the idea of people referring to Spencer as “Miss Carlin” for several seconds before she noticed that the kids weren’t as amused as she was by the title.
