    Los Angeles Breeds Forbidden Love

    Chapter Five: Reflection, Recollection

The ride home seemed much longer than the drive there, and the silence in the car felt stifling. At least it did to Glen, who spent much of the drive sneaking concerned glances in his sisters direction. She sat with her forehead against the glass, her slightly parted lips creating a small circle of fog when she exhaled and her warm breath hit the cool surface. Every so often a lone tear would drip from her eye and she’d quickly lift her hand, wiping it away. When the lighting was right he could see the reflection of her face in the window, and he was disconcerted by the glassy look her eyes had to them.

“That girl… You shouldn’t believe whatever she said…” Glen spoke, unable to stand the stillness any longer. “I’m sure she was just jealous of you.”

“It doesn’t matter, and she was probably right.” She replied, not looking at him as her arms crossed over her stomach. She felt cold, but it wasn’t a physical thing. It was just a silent chill spreading from her spine outwards.

“No Spence, it does matter. Even if Sarah did promise her those things, when it came right down to it, who was she with? With who did she share her bed? Who had the ring?” Glen could kill Sarah for making all of this so much more difficult. Unfortunately, that wasn’t really an option these days.

“Maybe I was just convenient.” Spencer hated that Ashley’s words held so much gravity over her thoughts, but she couldn’t help it. The more she obsessed over the idea, the more she believed it. Having zero self confidence is enough to make you believe anything.

“C’mon, you know that’s not true…” They pulled into the driveway, although neither got out of the car. Glen shifted in his seat so he was facing his sibling, “Spencer, look at me.”

“…No…” She objected, reaching for the handle of the car as she refused to turn and face him. The sound of him locking the doors and switching on the child’s lock finally caught her attention. “Glen, let me out.”

“Look at me.” He demanded again, tugging slightly on her elbow.
