I Know What You Are
"Holy crap. That's a lot of kids."I couldn't imagine having that many brothers and sisters, no matter if they were adopted. Mom and Dad never really discussed having anymore kids, they both came from small or normal sized families. I always wanted a brother, a older one. Being an only kid in a household was boring but I could always cause enough trouble for two which might have the reason they decided not to have another one.
"Yep, how they do it, I have no idea."She said putting the papers into my bag. "Just one seems difficult enough." She smiled, winking at me.
"Relax, you'll get used to it."I murmured, rolling my eyes. Grabbing my bag I headed out the door. "See ya later."
"Oh, hey Syd?"She called down the hall, I turned back to look at her. "Next time you play in the woods, don't get muddy."
I shook my head, trying to keep from grinning "I have no idea what your talking about."
I got there late. Nessie was already sitting in a booth, a black water bottle in her hand, going through papers. "Sorry I'm late, had a little…trouble getting here." I lied.
"That's fine."She muttered, "All you need to do is type this up and we will be set."
"You serious?"I asked, looking at the papers filled with Nessie's elegant handwriting.
Nessie looked amused. "Yep, that's it. Oh, I got to go my rides here."I nodded, still looking through the pages.
"Alright. See you later than."
"Do you need a ride?"She asked.
"What do you mean?"I looked up questioningly at her, how did she find out?
"Your car."Nessie nodded toward my vehicle."I know a bit about them."
"No that's fine. I….im going to stick around here for awhile." She only cast one more look at me than left. I gazed outside at my Buick. How could anyone know just by looking at it? I couldn't, mechanics are way beyond me.
"Coffee?"A voice asked. "Hey, your the new girl."
"Um, no. I mean yes, about being new. No to the coffee." I looked at the waiter, he looked about my age, dark hair and light blue eyes. "Can I ask you something?"
"Depends."He answered.
"Can you tell if there's anything wrong with that black Buick over there?"
"No…looks normal but cars aren't really my thing."He paused. "Why'd you ask?"
"It's really kind of stupid,"I told him. "Thanks anyway."
"Sydney, Sydney Wheeler, right?"He ran a hand through his hair. "I'm Evan."
"Well, Evan, nice to meet you. Now if you don't mind, this place have a phone I can use? It seems I left mine at home."
"Oh wow, um yeah it's over there." He laughed. "Or I could give you a ride, my shifts up anyways." His eyes seemed to take in my expression as he said that. "I don't bite."
"Yeah, okay sure. I must warn you though, with my luck, something bound to happen." I muttered getting up, following this Evan dude to his truck. "So does Evan have a last name?"I asked.
"Moore."Evan pulled out of the driveway, dodging parked cars in the packed cafe. "So um, Sydney, for taxi dirver purposes only where do you live?" He looked at me briefly, a somewhat serious gaze. I snickered.
"Relax. Im sure everyone will know where I live in the next week. Just keep going straight, it's right on the outskirts of town."I told him directing him to turn left. "Thanks for doing this by the way."
"Yeah no problem."
"How come I haven't seen you around before?"Trying to make small talk.
"Uh, I was in detention must of the couple days you've been here."He muttered avoiding the look I threw at him.
"What did you do?"I asked, suddenly curious.
"Teacher made a big deal out of it. I swear she's out to get me."He defended himself. "This house right here?"
"Yep."I said reaching for the door handle.
"Wait up."Evan said. "You owe me."
"Okay"I drawled, carefully getting out of the truck.
"Friday night. I'll pick you up at 7."I stood there in shock for a minute, then eventually slammed the door shut and went inside. I closed that door, feeling the schock plastered on m face. Amy was at the dinning room table. She looked up.
"What happened to you?"She asked.
