Chapter 28

Bette had all the tell-tale signs that she’d just got done having sex. Her hair was messed up, her buttons were done up wrong, and her shirt was untucked; something had never happened. Ashley avoided eye contact with her mother and Tina. She looked to the side, to the floor, and back to the side of her mother’s head. Bette was the first to speak.

“What the hell is going on in here?”

Silence.

“Ashley?”

Tina looked at her daughter.

“Spencer?”

Silence.

“You two better start talking!”

Tina said. She grabbed Bette’s hand for strength. She’d never imagine walking in on Spencer, but she had; and with Bette’s daughter. The situation was just strange and hard to wrap her mind around it.

“Mom, we were, uh, well shit; you know it pretty much was exactly what it looked like.”

“When did this start?”

“That was the first time Ms. Kennard.”

“Can we just sit down and talk about this?”

Spencer reasoned. She wanted to keep this awkward situation to a minimum. They walked over to the couch, Tina and Bette followed suit walking over to the other side of the living room. Bette noticed immediately that the girls were slightly inebriated.

“Have you two been drinking?”

Spencer panicked. Her eyes darted from Ashley to her mother to Bette. Up to Bette because she was still standing up with her hand on her hip looking down at them. Spencer felt the color drain from her face. She began to start sobbing. She’d never been in so much trouble in one night. Tina got up and went over to comfort her sobbing daughter.

“What’s the matter honey.”

Tina put her arm around Spencer’s shoulders.

“I’m sorry mom. I’m sorry Bette. We were just a nervous mess, and then we did it, and then I said I was afraid of Bette, and I feel like such an idiot. Mom I’m so sorry.”

She laid her head in her mom’s lap. She was babbling incoherently to her mother and Bette. Tina stroked Spencer’s hair.

“Baby it’s okay. Why are you afraid of Bette?”

Spencer looked up at her mother. She put up her right hand to Bette.

“No offence Ms. Porter-”

“Bette, and I’m sure none will be taken.”
