The Fosters, Season 1 Episode 18
March 3, 2014
The Fosters – We’ll skip the update on the kids and get to what we care about: Stef and Lena.
Stef visits Lena at school to discuss with Callie and Jude their birth father. There are questions and concerns that a biological father – even an absent one, an alcoholic who killed their mother in a car accident, one who hasn’t seen them in years – still has parental rights.
Stef points out that this is why she wants to use an anonymous donor.
“Well what if Timothy would agree to be an anonymous donor.”
Silence…
“Or do weeeeee????” Stef’s a smart cookie.
“He mentioned it… after that dinner…”
And things fell apart right there.
“Well, that’s great. I’ll tell you what… why don’t you give me a ring when the baby is born, and I’ll swing by the hospital and pick you up…unless you already have a ride.”
And Stef walks out.
Who could blame her?!
Stef was.not.happy.at.all. Lena has gone rogue. First she went to the doctor and talked about having a baby. Then she went on the prenatal vitamins without talking to Stef to see if SHE wanted more kids. Now, she’s not only picked out the sperm donor, but she’s pretty much committed to have him be her choice.
Hello, marriage? Wedding? Partners? Spouses? Why the hell is Lena doing all this without Stef’s input or consideration? Obviously, Stef felt the same way because she walked out, pretty upset.
BUT it’s The Fosters, and Stef is pretty mellow. She may get upset, but she doesn’t stay mad. She and Lena play good parents throughout the episode.
Then we’re treated to one of the best scenes EVER…
Stef and Lena are on the sofa, talking about kids/life/complications, including Lena speculating that maybe she’s crazy for wanting to bring one more kid – a baby – into the mix.
Stef steps up… “All these kids… are going to be going off to college, hopefully, in a few years,” she muses, “and the the house is going to seem awfully empty, I think.” Stef is thinking hard – feeling deeply – sighing lots. “If you want to use Timothy, I think we should get together – all three of us – and … talk about it.” You can see Stef is just getting there… she’s struggling a bit… but she gives Lena what she wants.
“Really?” Lena can see Stef is struggling. Stef looks at her … lots of love… smiles and says “Yeah, really.” And we feel it. Stef is there.
And then we’re treated to one of the best Stef/Lena make out scenes EVER. Kudos to ABC Family, again, for their willingness to depict lesbians not just as mothers but as partners, lovers, sexual beings.
Big thanks to JoanS for her always terrific work on her videos for TheFosters:
