Jessica Jones: Lesbian Character

November 20, 2015 By Jacky 2 Comments

Jessica Jones Lesbian FanfictionMarvel Comics series JESSICA JONES has premiered on Netflix. Lesbians will rejoice at both the series and the character.

Well, we hoped we’d have our first lesbian super hero has arrived in JESSICA JONES of the Marvel Comics canon. But we have a major character in Jeri Hogarth. Played by Carrie-Anne Moss, Jeri Hogarth is a manipulative, no-nonsense lawyer who hires Jessica (Krysten Ritter) for her private investigation skills.

According to MTV:

The character’s sexual identity isn’t just lip service to fans who’ve demanded more LGBT representation, either; her own romantic relationships are just as prominent and powerful as those of heterosexual couples on the show (although they certainly don’t define her, which is always a concern when depicting often marginalized characters). And in exploring Hogarth’s personal life, “Jessica Jones” gives us something that’s even rarer than same-gender couples are on television: a divorce between a same-gender couple.

“Often what I’m depicting is shown with men all the time: the older man leaving his long term partner for somebody young and hot,” she said (and to buy into the trope even further, the “somebody young” is Jeri Hogarth’s legal secretary). “And that’s what Geri is all about. In a big part of her storyline is this relationship that she has with this young woman, and her letting go of a long term marriage. So I liked that she’s so strong and everything, but at the same time, you know of see what a mess her personal life is.”

The series premiered today, November 20, on Netflix. Based on the character from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos’ excellent comic book Alias, Jessica Jones is really not a show meant for kids. It’s violent, dark, sexual.

IMDB description: Ever since her short-lived stint as a Super Hero ended in tragedy, Jessica Jones has been rebuilding her personal life and career as a hot-tempered, sardonic private detective in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. Plagued by self-loathing, and a wicked case of PTSD, Jessica battles demons from within and without. She uses her extraordinary abilities as an unlikely champion for those in need, especially if they’re willing to cut her a check.

Krysten Ritter stars as Jessica Jones. She is well-known for her critically acclaimed turn as “Jane Margolis” on AMC’s hit series, Breaking Bad (2008). She played the title character, “Chloe”, in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 (2012), for ABC.
She will also play Jessica Jones in the upcoming Netflix event mini-series The Defenders.

Jessica Jones requires absolutely no knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 99% of its content, according to Geek.com. At one point, a character mentions “The Incident,” which is what Marvel characters call the attack on New York at the end of the first Avengers movie, and characters like Captain America and The Hulk are referred to as examples of a costumed superhero and a strong person respectively, but you won’t need to remember if Baron Von Strucker survived his latest run in with SHIELD.

I do not know anything about the girl playing Jessica.
The woman playing Jeri, Carrie-Anne Moss, should be familiar to most of us as she was the female lead in the three MATRIX movies (and, oddly, had previously been featured in a shortlived TV series called Matrix, which had no relation to the movies).
Netflix has been hosting Orange Is The New Black for at least 3 seasons – not exactly a lesbian series but considerably more overt lesbianism than on any of the major cable channels now – and now it’s added Jessica Jones. Netflix is maybe developing a niche market in the aftermath of the de-gaying of the Logo channel.

Carrie-Anne Moss is truly wonderful in this series. There was a scene with her and the character Jessica, outside of the conference room where the people who may have seen Kilgrave were gathered, and at the very end of Moss’ and Jessica’s conversation, Carrie-Anne did a couple of quick facial moves that were masterful.
