Work In Progress
Busy mornings for the Kennard-Porter household just got a whole lot busier. With Bette already a week into her job and Tina’s unpredictable schedule, the morning task of getting Angie ready and fed became a joint effort. They would take turns making breakfast and feeding their daughter before dropping her off at Hazel’s. Helena had referred the young nanny to them and they agreed that she not only qualified but that her location was convenient for them to drop off and pick Angie up from.
“Well, Angie and I are off to sample Red’s latest masterpiece. Aren’t we boo?” Tina looked in the rear view mirror at a strapped up Angie “Too bad you have early meetings babe.”
Lara and Red had come up with this idea to reinvent a bunch of the favorite breakfast deserts and make them fat free without tasting fat free. Lara would plan each recipe substituting certain ingredients then she would give the recipe to Red to bake. The resulting batch would be taste tested by a panel of special judges who frequent the café, a.k.a. the gang. Every Friday morning the guinea pigs would gather at their usual table and sample what ever treats were made that morning giving thumbs up or down. The item needed a unanimous or two-thirds majority vote in order to be added to the menu, other than that meant going back to the drawing board.
“Yeah you get to try the fat free food without me for the first time since they started” Bette said standing outside Tina’s car door
“We’re getting free fat free food” Tina corrected her
“Ain’t nothing wrong with that” she cheered “Baby don’t forget to pick up my dry cleaning on your way from work” Bette reminded her
“I know” Tina put the car in reverse “Kay, see you later babe”
“Later, love you guys”
“Love you too” Bette said as she watched drive off.
Bette had been in and out of meetings all morning and was beginning to feel drained from it all. She had not experienced a busy day like this since working at the CAC. One problem Bette could think of would be that of Prof. Jodie Lerner, who she had just met that morning in a faculty meeting. Handicap or not, the professor had become an academic pain in the ass for the dean. After the fiasco with the last potential investor Jodie had been moved up to the top of Bette’s shit-list. Phyllis’ yearly faculty party was announced during one of the meetings, and she hoped the professor would bless them with her absence.
