    What Hurts The Most

Dana looked questioningly at Tina which did nothing to coax a verbal response from  her friend and she wisely decided to leave it.

“Hey..is it safe to join you…feeling a little left out over there….”  Alice approached the 3 ladies at the bar.

“Hi Alice…I’m going to take Bette home”

“I’ll take her home if you want….. Dana can go with you”  Alice offered.

“Dana can go where with you”

“Nowhere that can’t wait Bette” Tina replied truthfully, she had waited the best part of 25 years to meet the man who purely through genetics held the title of father another day or so mattered not.

Bette stubbornly sat back down “Tina I’m not going anywhere until you tell me”  she huffily folded her arms to accentuate her point.

Tina smiled at Bette’s child like antics “You really are an adorable drunk Ms Porter”  She unfolded Bette’s arms and wrapped them around her own waist. “And if you didn’t smell so bad you know I’d be kissing right about now”

    “You would?”

“Yeah I would…”  Tina leaned in towards Bette.  “Maybe I should just check if you taste as bad as you smell”

“Yeah maybe you should” Bette had already dropped her eyelids in anticipation of what was to come.

“Oh god…lets get outta here Dana”  Alice said taking Dana’s hand and leading her away, Dana allowed herself to be dragged away but not before craning her neck round to catch a glimpse of the lip locked pair.

“Aw look….that’s so cute…..you don’t think their cute Al….I think their cute”

“I wouldn’t let Bette here you call her cute Dana…Bette doesn’t do cute”  Alice warned.

“Nonsense her growl is much worse than her bite…..Didn’t you see me Al I whipped that drink right from her grasp and she was powerless to stop me”  Dana said triumphantly.  She took and swung Alice’s hand as they made their way back to Alice’s car.

“Oh yeah Dana I saw you…you certainly strapped on a pair…..speaking of which”  Alice raised her eyebrows.

“Your obsessed and still my answer is not in this lifetime”

“Oh come on….you know you want too….we’ll draw straws and I’ll even let you have first pick”

Dana laughed “Alice do you really think I’m that dumb…..you don’t think I know that you were holding 2 short straws”

    1. That was painful Skimmer, my fragile Tibette heart has been shattered! With that being said, I think you are an amazing writer. That was a painful, honest, appropriate ending. I was one of those “not in this lifetime” when it came to children. I knew from an early age that I would not have children. I had young nieces that I would see a couple of times a year and I was completely uncomfortable in their company. Several years later, something happened I don’t know why but I actually began to want children but thought the time had passed, that I was too old to raise a child. Just before reading this today, I sat with my 10 year old daughter watching cartoons and laughing myself silly. People change, I surely did. I cannot imagine a life without her. Tina and Bette are such polar opposites on the issue. Both with strong positions right from the beginning. I’m not sure they could have gotten to that place of compromise from where they were. I think resentment would finally creep in and damage their relationship beyond repair. I look forward to a new story Skimmer, there will be a new story, right???

    2. Jikes, I just want to note that I can’t find anywhere in this chapter at least that says Tina wants a child soon. Hugs. And I am one of those who never wanted kids but when I met someone who i really cared for changed her view of wanting kids from not wanting them (years later), i started to re-think things…but never changed my mind because we broke up before we got that far..

    3. Quite the reaction Skimmer. One more comment and I am done…All I can say is that I think Bette will feel more remorse about this later than Tina. They’ve been together for what 6 months and decide to break up after a 10 minute conversation.? Shame.

    4. uh… ‘The End’ didn’t really mean the end right? i have to say i’ve loved this story from the beginning and was incredibly happy when you reposted it but wow, that ending really came out of left field. i was expecting tina to take bette with her to see her father and then bam, they break up. all i have to say to that is sequel please.

    5. I sooo wasn’t expecting this ending regardless of the title. I guess what I see is that they are making such a major decision in such a short period of time. Before Tina, Bette couldn’t even see a relationship with anyone and Tina changed that. Who’s to say that as they would have grown in the relationship, Bette would have started wanting the ultimate family tie with Tina. I am in favor of an epilogue with a happy, TiBette ending.

    6. No No! You can’t end it there – what ending is that. Please please write a sequel – you are aren’t you :) you’re just mucking with it. So sad you can’t end it like this. Sigh! Please pretty please – sequel?

    7. Excellent, though heartbreaking end to an excellent story, skimmer. I agree with the others that ending a relationship after a ten minute discussion is a bit hasty. I never wanted children, however, I met someone that did and have three kids that I adore and wouldn’t trade for anything. There’s hope for Bette down the road.

    8. Well, that certainly was a Friday night heavy Skimmy….This whole issue has not nearly been discussed enough to make the decision they both did. Neither of them know why they feel the way they do…why doesn’t Bette want children?…Tina doesn’t know. Why does Tina want them?…Bette doesn’t know. If what they feel really is love, then love has been put to the test and it should be worth more than a 10 minute conversation. So…if both of them could walk away that easily…if both of them didn’t think what they had was worth trying to investigate their feelings more, then they were right to break up, because what they had wasn’t what they thought it was. That was sad…definitely not typically Tibette (sniff, sniff)…I’m going now to get my box of Kleenex and a good stiff drink!

    9. Whats going on here? this is not ending? This is a sad ending for B&T. Why? Hope you jk, please make a sequel, make them happy again. That was awesome and sad story and hope to see you soon with the new happy B&T, thanks!

    10. Skimmy thanks for the courage to write a story that is true to its title and thanks for being a friend, looking forward to reading the next chptr of The Greatest Love Story and what other surprises you have in your pocket.

    11. Well written. But I didn’t like the ending. It seemed like too much of a snap decision. But then again communication wasn’t their strong suit in this story. I know miscommunciation makes for the drama in the story. But if children were so important to Tina something should have been said earlier in the relationship even in a little discussion. Tina in this story rather have sex to try to fix an issue. Well there are people like that aren’t there? Hard to believe that the story is over. :(

    12. The end??? You’re kidding right? Please tell me there’s a follow up story. You’re a great writer and I’m so glad you decided to come back and although this was a wonderful story you can’t leave us hanging like this. Please continue…I hate a sad ending. Please post another story soon!!

    13. o. m. g. I will say, hand on heart, that despite the title of this story, despite singing the chorus to the song every time I saw the title of your story, I totally did NOT see that particular curve ball coming. Bette’s not even had a chance to come around! Ugh, so sad. You can *not* end it there. Even though it looks like you just did… *sigh*. Sequel? Please?

    14. Skimmie! You posted. I haven’t read yet, and judging from the first few comments… Well. I may be upset with you for a few days. I’ll go read now and yell at you later, ok?

    15. Well. That was sad. But really good. Do I void my Tibetteship membership if I say that I liked it? I tend to avoid sad endings, being a total wimp and crying at the drop of a hat like I do making them particularly unbearable, but this was… really great. I mean, this is one area in which there are no compromises, and it would be unfair to either of them to have to make a sacrifice. I think I would have liked for both of them to have taken a couple of days to think it over a little more, but I doubt that would have changed anything. I know that you don’t want to continue with this story, but maybe you should give your saddened Tibette fans an epilogue (with a big disclaimer that this is not how the story should end) in which Bette has come around. Though that’s unfair. I’m looking at it from the perspective of someone who wants kids, because I really do. Anyway, I had wondered why the title was that when things seemed to be going so well. Thanks for the story, Fat Legs ;) And for pushing me to write more and better.

    16. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!I am sure there is a sequel, isn’t it???? What a sad ending, it’s not like a Tibette hey. How long before they miss each other??? I believe in the fact that they will come back to each other. haaaaaaaaaa, that hurt. Thank you for the story tho, love your style.

    17. Wow! Can I just say I’ve been a silent reader of this story since it’s beginning perhaps leaving a comment or two in the process. I’ve really enjoyed this story and I’m sad to see it go. I commend you for chosing to end the story in the way that you have. I think as writers it is difficult to make the choice of ending something as a nice pretty package cookie cutter happily ever after or to make it real. Tina’s choice I think speaks of her love for bette in that she wouldn’t make bette live a life she didn’t want likewise bette understood that she couldn’t have tina lose out on her dream. A difficult but noble choice on each of their behalfs. Thank you for this story!! I look forward to what else you have in store

    18. Oh,no,no,no…this is not the end, really it can’t be,you put there at the end “…” so it must continue.I like it,you write very well and everything was good, but I still want my TiBette ending,so this is not where it stops. If we beg can we have a sequel? Please, pretty please.Anyway thanks for writing it,it was an interesting journey.

    19. I’ve changed my mind. I will boycott you if you write an epilogue. Sorry, all, but this story couldn’t end any different. In my mind, Bette didn’t really want kids. Especially not as much as Tina. I think losing Tina and Angelica’s presence changed that, and Bette realized how important kids were, but I cannot imagine the Bette that Tina first met would have wanted children. So, when this issue came up so early in the relationship, there could be no other outcome.Skimmie, stay strong, my friend ;) This was right.

    20. Shame on you Skimmer! Wow, I was not expecting that but maybe jikes is right, the ending certainly goes along with your title….i’m sad now……can someone cheer me up?

    21. Jikes, You and I may differ on this but I’m pretty sure Bette wanted kids before they tried to have them in the L-Word – she was just afraid getting. She was just getting cold feet because she was feeling insecure about a lot of things at the time. Perhaps Bette didn’t want them initially but in time the idea grew on her and Tina got her to understand she would be a great parent unlike her own mother. People can change as time goes on when they are with someone they love.

    22. Wow, what an incredible story. I do think the ending is very realistic for where they were in their lives. I imagine as time goes by, Bette would find the idea of children with Tina to become something she too would desire. I’m sure a lot of it was Bette’s insecurities about being a good parent, and Tina’s insecurities about the way she was raised. I think it is very rare for people to be at exactly the same place with regard to children early on in a relationship, that comes with time, security, and MUCH discussion. Just my 2c. Skimmer, I can’t wait to read more stories from you, thanks.

    23. geeky, you may be right. But like Pagash said after, reaching that same place would take a lot of time. And in my opinion the issue came up too early. It’s hard for me to see it from both sides, though, because I do want children eventually and someone who categorically didn’t want them would be a deal breaker for me. But this Bette was very clear that she won’t change her mind, and it’d be unfair for both of them to stay in a relationship hoping for the other person to change. I may have been too strong about the L word. I think, though, than when they met, they were both too focused on their careers to discuss a family, at least in very defined terms. But this Tina wanted kids soon. Pagash’s point is sad. Bette may find, later on, that the idea of having kids with Tina is appealing. But I hope she doesn’t, because that would be superpainful, having thrown away her love for an idea that she wavered on.

    24. What a wonderful story, and what a wonderful ending. I just loved it. I would normally be inclined to protest an ending that does not reunite our two favorites characters, but is was so well done. Very good. I look forward to the next story. pps
