    Vignettes: Chapter 71

“So what you’re telling me is that our daughter is dating the neighbor girl?”

Bette nodded slowly, smirking with each shake of her head.

    “And they’ve had *****?”

    Another nod.

“And she called off work because she was up all night with her?”

Bette simply raised her eyebrows.  Tina stared at her, waiting for some sort of response.  After a minute she started pacing in the living room again.

    “Why didn’t she tell me?”

    Bette shrugged.

“And why won’t you say something?”

“Because I can’t answer all your questions.  You need to talk to Kody yourself.”

Tina looked at her watch.  “I will in two hours.”

“T, why are you so upset?”

“The question is why aren’t you upset?”

“I really don’t see a problem here.  Kody likes a girl.  She’s twenty five and finding out who she really is.  So what’s wrong?”

Tina placed her hand on her hip.  “What’s wrong?  She didn’t talk to us about it!  You’d think with parents like us we’d be the first people she’d come to.”

Bette sat back for a moment, hesitating before answering.  If she were honest, she’d admit that the same thought crossed her own mind not too long ago as she watched her daughter uncomfortably come out to her.  But instead of demanding answers, she guarded her patience and let Dakota speak and stumble over her words.  Bette knew that sooner or later it would come out, but only if she pushed aside her own thoughts to let her daughter talk.  It was hard but it had to be done.

“T, do you remember when you were twenty five?  When you first realized you had a thing for me?”

Tina suddenly stopped pacing to look at Bette.  She froze in the middle of the floor, her brown eyes studying Bette’s.  She scowled then flushed and sighed.  Every time she tried to speak, her voice caught in her throat so that the only gesture she could make was a simple nod of the head.

Bette arched an eyebrow and folded her arms across her chest.  She remained silent trying not to portray an I-told-you-so kind of look.  As realization and understanding hit Tina, words started to come to her again.

    1. fareast, I will read you at whatever pace you want to write. I like slow, slows good when it comes to the stories you so skillfully weave for us. The only downside…is when they come to an end. This post was simply perfect.

    2. Discovery, of any kind, can be both exciting and frightening. Dakota is lucky that she has someone so close to her with first hand knowledge of how she feels. The way Dakota approached the subject of what she was doing later was perfect, she’s still unsure and testing the waters, she doesn’t want to assume, but wants assurances at the same time. Glancing at the door, another sign that things are more than just ‘good’. I love the pace that you have set with this entire story. Maybe Tina’s discussion with Dakota will lead her to rediscover that ‘ahhh’ feeling she had when she first met Bette. Falling in love again is so much fun.

    3. so sweet – Bette coaching Tina and Tina realizing she needs to open up to get her daughter to open up. Can’t wait for you next chapter. this was so good – I love how you unfold these characters for us with humor and grace.

    4. I absolutely love this story to death! But I really can’t wait to find out what’s on that video tape the girls found! You’re not purposely teasing us are you?

    5. You are one of my most favorite authors on this site. The chapter was wonderful and beautifully written. I could read your stories over and over again. I will wait patiently for the story that Tina is about to share and will wait again for the news as to what is on that tape. Thanks so very much for writing for this amazing website. *smiles to you* and Have a Happy Tuesday!

    6. You have really taken us full circle Fareast and it have been a wonderful ride. Interesting how Kody feels more comfortable talking with Bette. I can’t wait to see her reaction to Tina’s “story”.

    7. …” “Ok… tell me a story.”…and with that, we come full circle. This has been a wonderful story, from the framily coming together for a reunion weekend to the future with the two daughters and now, back to the legendary meeting at the Bette Porter gallery. Thanks!
