    Vignettes: Chapter 59

“Zoe can you grab that spatula?”  Tina stretched her arm over the stove.  Zoe was sitting on the counter with her nose stuck in a book.  Never taking her eyes off the page, she opened the drawer below her and pulled out the utensil, then handing it to Tina.

“Thanks.”  Tina said.  “So are you going to talk to your mother your last night living under this roof or are you going to ignore her?”

Zoe simply lifted her hand to motion for her mother to be quiet for a minute.  Tina rolled her eyes and continued cooking, knowing it was better to wait than interrupt her daughter’s reading.

“Finished.”  Zoe smiled and dropped the book next to her.

    “Good book?”

“Definitely.  Now what were you saying earlier?  Something about me ignoring you… I didn’t hear you because I wasn’t paying much attention.”  Zoe smirked.

“Where did I go wrong?  How did my daughters become such smart asses?”

    “We take after you.”

“You take after your mama.”  Tina corrected her.

“No, you.”  Alice said as she entered the kitchen.  “Bette’s just more blatant about her smart assedness.”

“Smart assedness?  Is that the new slang?”  Zoe laughed.

    “Smart *****.”  Alice replied.

“Where’s Dana?”  Tina asked as she took a cookie tray with a cookie crust on it out of the oven.

“Talking to Bette outside.”  Alice dipped her finger in a bowl of whipping cream before Tina could slap her away.  Zoe did the same thing.

“You’re teaching my daughter bad habits again.”  Tina accused Alice.

“I can’t help it.  It’s not like I have any children of my own to corrupt.”

    “You have Dana.”

“It’s true… at times she is like a child.”  Alice laughed.

“She’s been hanging around you too long.”  Tina defended Dana.  “Your anniversary is coming up, isn’t it?”

Alice nodded.  “One month.  What a good memory you have.”

Tina smiled.  “How could I forget?  It’s not every day I share a wedding with my best friends.”

“What are you guys gonna do this year?”  Zoe asked.  Every year they either went away together to some fun place or had a party.

    4. ok far it’s me and yes I have been hiding in the shadows but I have come out and just wanted to say I love the way you are taking this story and look forward to many more chappy’s

    5. Zoe and Tina’s interaction in the kitchen was just like I expected them to be. Fluid and in sync.

Zoe leaving will be hard for them. Empty nest syndrome will be a challenge. Hopefully, they will be able to find other ways (ahem) to fill their time.

Telling Zoe that story was great. That’ll teach her to whine! I was rolling on the floor. Such a goofy group of friends that know just which buttons to push with each other.

I also liked the way you mentioned the anniversary…I can’t wait for the party.
