    Vignettes: Chapter 24

Shane looked at the metal box and laughed, wondering why Bette even had that box to begin with.

Bette, whats up with the box? Shane asked. Since when do you keep Dr. Seuss tins on hand?

Since Tina and I were going to have a baby, but that didnt happen the way we planned, did it? So… I couldnt get rid of it and I kept it stashed away for a long time. It came with books but I donated them to a childrens shelter downtown. When I was moving and packing, I came across this tin again and decided to put it to good use.

Im sorry, Bette, I didnt know. I wouldnt have joked about it if I had known. Shane looked at Bette with sympathetic eyes, able to somewhat understand how hard that time must have been in her and Tinas lives since she had a pregnant Fred at home.

Dont apologize. Its good to be able to laugh. I thought putting things inside of this box would be appropriate because losing our son was so hard. He will always be remembered.

I hate to say this because I know it just brings up past hurt, but… I wish you and Tina had been able to work it out. You guys wouldve made one ***** of a childraising team. This house should be filled with love and your children instead of empty and dark and lifeless.

Bette sighed. I wanted it to work out but it just didnt happen. I ran out of patience and Tina was too stubborn. I wanted to have babies with Tina more than you could ever know.

I know. I always could see it in your eyes, even when you acted so aloof.

Bette smiled at Shane and playfully wiped some dirt on her nose. Shane scrunched her face and smeared dirt on Bettes cheek. They laughed and threw dirt at each other and soon enough they were lyying on their backs talking.

Oh my god! Are you serious? Shane dropped the grocery bags and ran over to Fred, grabbing her and lifting her above the ground. She was surprised by her sudden burst of strength but held on and kissed Fred all over her neck and face.
